How do u distinguish between a heart attack and a heart burn?!

Question: Really nice question.

A home oximeter can tell difference between them, and two diseases can happen at same time together.

heart attack i believe ur left arm will go numb and ur body will struggle with itself, as with heart burn it just burns inside ur chest

Usually with a heart burn, you get a burning sensation in your heart which generally doesn't last that long, maybe a minute or 2. It's simply a minor discomfort. A severe heartburn can last a little longer. Now with a heart attack you feel intense pain in the heart as well as your left shoulder. This pain doesn't go away right away. This is usually the sign of a heart attack and in this case you should seek medical help immediately

the pain level with a heart attack can be so intense that people pass out, heart burn whilst painful will not do that if your not sure you should go to drs

Take an antacid. If it goes away, it was heartburn. If it doesn't, go to the hospital.

the left arm goes numb, severe chest pains, excessive sweating.

so if you think your having a heart attack your whole left side starting with your left arm will go numb, cause your heart is on your left side. lol... but yeah if you think your having a heart attack dont screw around call your doctor, or emergency room and talk to a nurse or a triage nurse and they will help you out. but if you think your having heart burn, starting in the middle of your chest will like burn and it hurtrs. thats the best way for me to explian that... but yeah heart attacks, they are scary, and you would feel your **** skip a beat trust me i know this stuff i just went over it in my medical assisting career and thats what was explain to us. so yeah

good luck..

Actually, women feel different symtoms than men before a heart attack. Heart burn and nausea is one of the most common. Thats why heart disease is the #1 killer for women. They do not think its a heart attack.

It can sometimes be to difficult to distinguish between the 2. With a "typical" heart attack, you might have sweating, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, a feeling of doom. The pain sometimes radiates to your neck and your left arm, but certainly not always. In fact, many women and diabetics don't have pain at all, just nausea brings them to the emergency room. It's usually an incidental finding on an EKG or the lab work which says it's a heart attack. You won't/can't tell at home with certainty. If you have risk factors and are experiencing something disconcerting, go to the ER.

One evening my grandpa thought he had heartburn. He had it all evening, all night, and into the morning. He was dead by 9am from a heart attack he didn't know he was having. Based on his experience.... if your heartburn medicine doesn't work within 1/2 hour to an hour, go to the hospital because it isn't heartburn!!

Unfortunately, it can be very difficult to distinguish between these types of pain. For many people, the pain can be identical!
Heart burn often begins as epigastric and/or central chest pain, which may radiate up to the neck.It may be associated with nausea. It is relieved by antacid, eating, drinking or sitting upright. It can be extremely painful, and many believe they are having a heart attack!
Heart attack pain may present in exactly the same way. OR it may not be a "pain" at all, but rather a heaviness, a stabbing, or a squeezing sensation, often accompanied by shortness of breath or nausea. It also may be a feeling of pins and needles in the arm, neck or jaw. It may radiate to the neck, shoulders, arms, back, jaw, and strangely enough in some people the little finger!
The most important thing is that if the pain lasts more than 10 minutes, and is unrelieved by rest, change in position, or an antacid, you need to seek medical attention without delay.

If you're still alive, chances are this is heartburn. Classically, a heart attack is described as a crushing central chest pain radiating to throat and left arm, associated with sweating nausea and a sense of impending death. Heartburn on the other hand is described as a burning sensation, worse on lying flat. However, this is not always the case. Heart attacks can occur without any pain, especially in diabetics and the elderly. Ultimately, if you have significant risk factors, such as smoking, diabetes, family history, high blood pressure etc and get chest pain, especially brought on by exertion, seek medical advice. Ultimately there is no hard and fast rule to distinguish between the two without ECGs or blood tests.

Eat less animal fat.

I thought I new the differance. Bad, what I thought was heart burn one night. I dismissed it as poor eating discretion from the pior evening. A little discomfort in my left shoulder blade, which again, I dismissed to the fact I'd been doing some push ups to try to get my fat little body back in shape. After all, even with a bad family history of heart disease, resulting in the cause of death to most of my uncles and my father, I was only 52, so I figured I had more time to reverse this disease. DENIAL almost cost me my life!!
