What are the side effects of Percocet for an extended period of time?!

Question: I have degenerative disc disease and I've been through pain management for the last 4 months. I hate taking these percocets, but they are the only thing that helps. At first, I felt sick to my stomach and whatnot, but that has all gone away. What's gonna happen when I stop taking them or must continue to take them forever?

If one takes narcotics for an extended period of time the body WILL become addicted. There is a huge difference between people that can take them and taper off with no problem and those who realize they really miss the high and find ways to take it again.(drug seeking behavior) You sound like the kind who does not get a kick out of it. You can ask your doctor to give you a drug called phenergan that stops the nausea. Also switching to Oxycontin might help to, It is the same thing as percocet (oxycodone being the active ingredient in both), but instead of having to take 4-6 percocet's a day the time release formula in Oxycontin calls for just one a day. This manages chronic pain much better because you will not experience the peaks and valleys of having to take one every 4-6 hours, thus having a continued level of oxycodone in the blood stream for 12 hours.

After 4 months you have a light addiction to them. You really need to speak with your Doctor. It sounds like the dosage might have been a little high to start out on. With degenerative disc disease the only thing is disc replacement or pain medication, take your pick.
