Lymph nodes? help???!

Question: i went to the hospital last night cause i felt a bump on the right side of my neck; its little and about the size of a pea as the doctor at the emergency room described it. he said it was a lymph node and not to worry it would go away but i am still worried!!!! my throat has been hurting off and on for the past four months(otolaryngologist said its allergies but my throat has been getting better the past couple weeks). i of course being the worse case scenario kinda person am worried it might be cancer but since im so young (20) i cant get any doctor to take me seriously or even double check this. it does hurt at the moment and is bothering me and my right ear was hurting at work today. i also do have my wisdom teeth coming in very strongly atm so i dont know if that has to do with it. i do not get fevers or anything my temperature is always like 98.0. i did fight off a horrible flu/cold about a month ago, but like i said i am still worried and dont know what to do. please help! thanks

I'm so put off by a majority of these answers!!!!!!!!! I'm 25 and about a year ago I found a lump on the left side of my neck, it moved around and I was concerned. I went to my family doctor and he ran some tests and sent me to a ear, nose and throat doctor. Long story short, I had cancer, stage four Hodgkin's Lymphoma, I'm now in remission. Take it serious and get a second opinion. *****Also on a side note I did not have any symptoms like that jerk was saying that you would. I'm now in remission and feel great!!!! I wish you the best of luck!!!!!

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me.

swelling of lymph nodes is usually just because of an infection. its just lots of production of anti bodies.

Relax -- it's probably not cancer! Sounds to me like it could be mono. Lots of times lymph nodes will swell and then shrink because of infections.

I just brought my daughter to the doctor to check a lump in her chin. It is also just a lymphnode. The Dr. said that as long as it moves around it's fine. She also asked if there were any teeth issues going on...which there is with you. She said that some lymphnodes will just stay enlarged, but they are harmless. She described them like a balloon blowing up and when they go back down, they never go to the way they were before they were blown up. I have had a potruding lymphnode on the back of my neck for about 15 years. It's nothing. I think you are worrying yourself into feeling sick. I'm sure you are fine. Especially because the Dr. wasn't worried.

Lymph nodes filter your blood. If you have a sore throat, ear infections, etc most of the time your lymph nodes in your neck will swell. It is a normal immune response. Pea size lymph nodes are absolutely normal.

well you shoulddefinitely get checked again, ask the doctor to tae a cat scan or x ray another thing they can do is a biopsy, a biopsy is where they take a needle and stab the lump and they will test it and tell you if it is malignant meaning cancerous or not. god forbid. and tell them that there has been cancer in your family and they should be able to run test for you they cannot refuse if you tell them you want to be thested for whatever it is. cancer is very serious and being that it has been in your family you shouldnt just take one opinion from one person. i know what that is like, my mother had breast cancer twice 17yrs ago the first time and the second 3 yrs ago but the second time they didnt detect it on time and it started to spread over time because of a mistake of one of the doctors, the cancer we taught was gone came back about 1yr ago into her lymph nodes in her right side of her neck and she sadly didnt make it hte 3rd time. i wish you the best and ill keep you in my prayers im 24 and i myself will go to the dr for any little thing i feel is not right. god be with you.

First off, calm down..

Obviously this is a very emotional issue for you but you ARE being rediculous. Cancer has a LOT more symptoms than one swollen lymph node. This sort of dramatics borders on hystrionics.. like the boy who cried, "wolf" you will not be believed later on if you DO have a real issue, so just quit acting in such a rediculous fashion and use the common sense you were gifted with.

Think logically, NOT emotionally.

I am not trying to be mean, I am just trying to help you be more mature about your health.

Everything does not have to be so dramatic and attention seeking. There are people with real problems who DO have to deal with cancer and when you act like this you drag everyone around you down.. yes, including the doctor. Yes your health is important but honestly, there is no such thing as a "worse case senario kind of person." This is just about you trolling for attention. (whether you want to hear that or not). Again I am not saying this to be mean, I am not tryin to hurt your feelings... I just think you need to hear it so you can stop and evaluate how you are approaching this.

So someone in your family had cancer. That sucks. It happens.. doesn't mean you are doomed. Your grandma also had 10 x the lead and pesticide AND nuclear fallout expose in merely her childhood, than you will have in your ENTIRE LIFE. That is why cancer is so high in the baby boomer generations... not bad genetics. So give it a rest and look at the facts.

You probably have MONO! At 20 it is far more likely to have mono than anything else (especially if you kissed anyone on the mouth or shared a drink within the past 6 months, rubeed your eyes or nose after touvhign a desk touched by an infected person, etc.,). Mono is HIGHLY contageous and can stick around in your body for over a year.

If your lymph nodes are swollen you could have had it for up to 6 months already and never knew it... maybe just felt a little more tired than usual. Simply calmly ask the doctor to give you a mono test. He will be relieved you are being responsible for your own care and say "hey, that's a great idea." If it comes back negative (unlikely in my mind) then you probably had a very nasty strain of influenza (which can also stay in your body and make you weak and ill for over 6 months as well!!! Believe it or not... most people do NOT fully recover from influenza after 2 weeks.. they are infected for 2 weeks, violently sick for 2 weeks, then show signs of carrying the illness (swollen lymph glands, cough) for a couple more weeks, then have muscle fatigue and a general sense of malaise for another four months or more. Perfectly normal.

Do the lymph nodes under your arm hurt? Any pain in the groin or ovary area (there are lymph nodes there too). Mononucleaosis can even mimic endometriosis in women and will cause pain along with your monthly cycle. Just depends how severely you have it and how long.

I would suggest that if you suspect a virus of any kind you take a large dose of the amino acids "Lysine" and "Proline" as a dietary suppliment (viruses cannot replicate in the presence of high levels of these amino acids), add some zinc (suck on zinc and vit C and you will knock out that throat cold in a day.. althought zinc alone will make you puke after about 15 minutes (yup, absolutely)... so it is better to use the zinc lozenges... you MUST suck zinc, not chew it..it has to come in direct contact with the virus, not be metabolized).

Instead of taking one amino acid tablet, take four at a time twice a day for about three days. If you feel better then half the dose and keep taking it for a couple more days (do not take excessive amounts of the zinc however, it is a metal.. amino acids are just the building blocks to proteins like meat or legumes... rest (get enough sleep) and eat healthy and you'll be fine.

Oh, and stop worrying.. stress actually causes your immmune system to weaken.... you CAN make yourself sick by worrying...

I hope this helps.

swollen lymph nodes are extremely common. they can take along time to settle down aswell (like months). usually they swell because you recently had an infection in your body.

they are nothing to worry about. if it starts to get bigger, that is when you need to start worrying. It is good that you are looking out for your body, but this is nothing to worry about.

sometimes doctors have a habit of not explaining things properly but they are also not mind readers. if you have questions ask them.

good luck and god bless you

Don't worry too much if you are just 20.
