Question: I smoke cig.s , I hate them and I'm trying to stop. I have been smoking since I was 13 and now I am 28. My question is , is there smokers out there that wish that they would higher up the prices or just out law the cig.s so it would be easier for you to stop smoking? I do...

i agree. cigs should cost more to supplement local taxes and help people quit

Yes I agree. Criminalize tobacco and legalize weed. That would bring a better change.

Did it stop you the last time they raised prices? It doesn't usually work; sometimes, but not usually.

Generally what works better are support programs. A network of supporters who can help you whenever you feel the need to smoke; family and friends are good for this. But there are groups like Smokers Anonymous to help as well.

Raising prices isn't a bad idea, I especially like the tax going to child healthcare idea. But don't expect it to stop you, nor anyone else. It will stop a few, but never as many as you would expect.

For the record:

I am a former smoker, but I started at 21 and only smoked a few months (quit before I turned 22). I went off and on every few months or so. Never for more than a month. I know its not as easy for everyone else as it was for me. But one of my closest friends is trying to quit, and keeps swearing he'll quit when the price goes up; he never did.

He is quitting now for his girlfriend, and he is getting support from her, me, and a few of his other friends. He has quit for a little over a month now.

I live in Hawaii and for 1 yr now, we've had the law that we cannot smoke near any buildings unless if its 20 ft away. Which sucks now. A lot of people thought they'd stop smoking and waited for the law to come....but they still didn't stop. Prices went up slightly and that didn't stop them. So I don't think it'd be different for you either. You need to WANT to stop smoking. Like people need to WANT to lose weight before they actually do it. You just don't have enough motivation to stop smoking. You do want to stop but that statement is not enough to wean off the cigs. Maybe if you tried the patch or the nicotine gum. Try anything at this point to exhaust yourself and see what happens....then you can say at least you tried some things =)

I am 50 and have been smoking since 13. Better to make them illegal and stop the hypocricy of collecting taxes! I completely agree with you.

I smoke too, and am trying to quit myself, however, I don't think its fair to pick on one segment of society. I think they should do the same thing with liquor.

It causes liver damage, fetal alcohol syndrome, and allot of other health related issues,
.
and I don't know about you, but I would rather share the road with a smoker, than someone who's been drinking, I would never encourage any one to smoke, but fair is fair.

u can also quit by taking homeopathic treatment
banning it will also help

I live in South Africa Cape Town. Started smoking at the same age. The price over here just goes up. Its now R20 a packet of ciggs this does demotivate you from smoking cause its sooooo expensive but still I smoke. I have quit a few times and its good to be clean, you feel heathly and breathe better.

I think the best way is one day at a time and DONT start again, NOT EVEN ONE DRAG, then you will be able to quit
