Can you hear without eardrum?!

Question: my uncle is 63 and he is now half deaf.
he lost one of his eardrums, and the other one is not working that great either..

is it possible for him to get a hearing aid for his perforated eardrum..?

as far as i know, eardrum converts the sound waves into an impulse that travels to your brain, where it is recognized as sound... so can you still hear sound without eardrum..?

Okay first off there are surgeries availabe to repair/replace eardrum it is called a tympanoplasty and they take tissue from elsewhere and put it in ear. Even without an eardrum though he can still hear although the sounds have to be much louder for him to hear them. Yes a hearing aid can help in this situation, however, most people try to go for a permanent fix with the surgery first and see how that goes and if the surgery fails they go to a hearing aid later. Tell your uncle to see an ear nose throat (ENT) physician.

no. without eardrum one cannot hear. u see, as your uncle's condition, that's why he's half deaf. as u know too, the eardrum have to catch vibration from sound which is air vibration, vibrate and send the signal through the hearing system in the ear to the brain. if no eardrum, how can the vibration of the sound be received in the first place? maybe if your uncle gets an eardrum transplant or using a synthetic/prosthetic will help his hearing.

If your ear drum isn't there, you won't hear.

Fortunately, research is being done toward making 'replacement' ear drums.
