Help! My three year old son has red bumps on his scrotum.?!

Question: About three or four weeks ago, I noticed a small bump or two (kinda wart like but one formed a head later on) under his arm on the side of his chest. Lately, it has multiplied to about 8 bumps. I really hadn't noticed bumps anywhere else. I actually called this week to my son's pediatrician and they went ahead and referred me to a dermatologist instead of making him come in for an appointment (which would have wound up in a referral anyways probably.) Then tonight, my son was itching complaining about a place on his "wee-wee" and I looked down there and he has the same bumps on the bottom of his scrotum. They are larger...and redder. What in the world could this be? It scares me so much! Should I go ahead and take him to the pediatrician or wait to take him to the dermatologist. I went from concerned to very worried when I found bumps in his private area. Any advice would be appreciated!

If you are scared and not getting any results from doctor visits, please take him to a children's hospital emergency room or urgent care center immediately. Emergency doctors are not "catch-all" doctors that should be used in order to cure just anything, however, his pain is reason enough for him to be seen by one of them to at least hold him over until you can get to see a doctor that is serious about your son's care. Many times the ER can make a referral to a really good specialist and get you into see them quickly.

Remember to tell the triage nurse at the ER that he's had the bumps for a while BUT "the reason you are here right now tonight is because of the recent rapid spread and the new complaint of bad pain that was not there before." I've worked in several ERs, it is important to speak their language so that they understand why you're there and what you need. They'll appreciate that.

It could be a form of diaper rash, especially if he has not been completely potty-trained. Please take him to his doctor in order to ease your mind if nothing else.
