What is best gastric bypass or lapband surgery?!

Question: What are the pro's and con's? I'm thinking of the lapband but would like to know how each has affected people.

IMO, gastric bypass. i know people who've had the band, and end up going to the RNY. this is where i had my RNY:

for me, the dumping syndrome is wonderful. it keeps me from eating too quickly or eating too much sugar.
but if you don't want major surgery, the band might be right for you.

gastric bypass pros:
dumping syndrome
quick weight loss
1oz pouch, you eat sooo little
gives you back your life

cons:
major surgery
lots of pain
have to take iron, calcium & B12 supplements for the rest of your life
can have complications, ie: stricture, or others
permanent

lapband pros:
no cutting thru muscles like in RNY
no dumping from eating sugar
you can have saline added or taken away to adjust how much or how little you can eat
removable & reversable

cons:
slower weight loss
band slippage
PBing (productive burping - which is kinda gross)

those are just SOME of the pros & cons that i can think of. if you want a website, send me a message. i can hook ya up & you can talk to others, like me, who've had both lap band AND gastric bypass (RNY).

Ok - I'm sure there is more to this than what you put here....have you tried dieting - really tried? Do you excercise at all to help drop the weight? I hope that you did and none of it worked which is why you are considering surgery - because that should always be a last resort.

I don't know much about either, sorry but I just had to ask those questions because sometimes people hear good things about a surgical procedure, then all of a sudden everyone wants to have one.....never did understand that 'keeping up with the Jones' stuff.

I can't speak for the lapband, but my older sister had the gastric bypass and had so many complications with it. She developed blood clots in her legs, got a body-wide staph infection, and was in the hospital for months. It has NOT been a good experience for her. I know two other people who also had the bypass. Neither of them had the complication issues, but only one of them lost major weight. The other one lost at first, but has gained much of it back. The person who lost a lot of weight has said that she would probably not have done it if she knew all the side effects that she lives with (taking daily pills, nausea eating many foods, lacking energy). If I were you, I'd try exercise and low-carb eating. It's worked for me; with any other diet, I gain, even if I count calories.

There are so many pros and cons for each. But to list a few...if you have lapband the pros's are that your recovery time is faster, back to work , normal life sooner, can eat most things sooner. The pros for lapband is ....you have to pay for extra fills' which are costly, sometimes the band can slip, and some people in the end go back for the RNY.
....But to find out more information go to www.obesityhelp.com. It's international .....you can ask questions to other patients in your area and state...doctors...and nurse. good luck , I hope that this was some help to you
