The honeymooning stage is different for every child. My youngest daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 last July. She was 8 at the time. She was only in her honeymooning stage for about 3 or 4 months. It is a day by day battle. Don't get discouraged, just take it one day at a time. Keep his sugar checked. Make sure he is seeing his endocrinologist, and try to find a local chapter of the JDRF to put you in touch with people in your area who have children with Type 1 diabetes also. Are you using syringes? Or, has your doctor put your child on the insulin pen. My daughter uses the insulin pen, Novolog for meals and extra offsets, and Lantus at bedtime. Good luck, and you are welcome to e-mail me for advice of support. I know that it is hard as we haven't even been doing this a year yet. I will keep you in my prayers.

Hiya, I'm not a professional but my best friend has diabetes so I've done tons of reading. All the books say that the honeymooning stage can last from days to weeks to months, one case study was over a year. Something to do with the pancreas has a last little "oomph" and can release the final insulin before the final cells are destroyed. (Presuming your little boy has type 1).
Anyway...hope this helps and hope your little man is ok :o) x

I'm sorry, Hon. I know it's devastating, my son was 12 when he was diagnosed. The honeymoon stage varies for each person, several months or so. Get him on the pump when you can.

i'm 22 now, i was diagnosed at the age of 8...honeymoon stage didnt last but a few months. and i am doing great and diabetes has made me a more responsible person. he will be fine : ) i suggest sending him to a summer camp (usually last for a week) when he gets old enough (i went at 8...but there were kids younger than me there). it was such a GREAT help for me....to meet other kids and make friends and have people to talk to when he has problems, or just wants to compare lifestyles! i went every summer until i was 16....and i still talk to about 10 people i met at that young age! just knowing there are others his age out there dealing with the same issues will boost his self confidence more than you will ever know! : ) most states have them every summer. Good luck!

Hi I have type 1 diabetes and I use a pump. I love it and it's so easy to control. The younger you are the shorter the honeymoon phase. It could be a couple of months or so. There is a great book called Understanding Diabetes, their web site is www.ChildrenDiabetesFdn.org. Another good one is the www.jdf.org that one is for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

I was diagnosed at age 11. I had only a brief 3-day period when I was off the insulin.
