Chest tightness.........again.....

Question: ok, i just want to know if anyone knows what this might be. my chest hurts and it is hard to breathe. i've already been to the doctor and the hospital. the respritory specialist listened to me breathing and said i'm only getting about 3/4 as much air as i should. i don't have asthma and i don't smoke. does anyone know what this might be and how to help it. they gave me an inhaler but it doesn't work. i am just sick of not being able to breathe. i had a chest x-ray and they found nothing. any ideas??

I had similar symptoms for years and it was finally diagnosed as panic / anxiety attacks. They are truly aweful and even after the diagnosis, I felt like an uptight idiot so I wouldn't accept it. But the fact of the matter is, our bodies all handle stress differently and usually badly.

Look into this and then look into stress management techniques, tools and support. I find great relief from regular non-stress work-outs like yoga, staying away from caffeine, and taking time-outs to decompress.

Good luck.

Start drinking atleast 1 or 2 bottles of water EVERYDAY. Maybe buy a Humidifier to put in your room, they clense the air when you have breathing problems such as chest colds.

well im definetly not a reliable souce but may be it could be a promblem with you trak , or something to do with you throht

OK, so I have more questions than answers...and this, of course, without an appropriate history/physical, is merely broad brushstrokes, and not real diagnostic care...

Chest pain has a massive list of possible causes, ranging from benign yet annoying, to critical. "Pleuritic chest pain" is what we call painful breathing. Do an internet search for that phrase, and see what you get. How old are you? Possibly pregnant? Past medical issues? Trauma? Surgeries? Meds? ex birth control pills? Allergies? etc. Is the pain worse when you inhale or exhale? Where is the pain? What does it feel like? Sharp/piercing or dull achy? What makes it better, what makes it worse?

Here is a totally random and very partial list -- do your reading about them, and then you can be more assertive with your physician. Don't give up.
costochondritis (Tietze's)
rib fracture/tumor
periostitis or periostial hematoma (history of trauma?)
xiphoidalgia
thoracic spondylitis
myositis or fibromyositis
intercostal neuritis
zoster
neurofibromatosis
causalgia
viral pleuritis
idiopathic pleurodynia
pulmonary embolus (in absence of DVT/leg pain & swelling)
SLE (systemic lupus erythematosus)
RA (rheumatoid arthritis)
vasculitis
diaphragmatic irritation
-pancreatitis
-splenic hemmorhage
-subphrenic abscess
familial polyserositis
pneumomediastinum
pericarditis, myocarditis
mediastinitis
primary pulmonary hypertension
pleuritis - lots of causes, ex uremia
pneumothorax (small ones may be missed on XR)
tumor NOS
