Problems eating?!

Question: Ok, well this may sound a bit wierd, but about once every 2-3 months this happens. First, it will usually start when I dont get enough sleep. That day, I will have trouble eating. Its not that i'm not hungry, its just that i have a hard time eating basically anything. I will have food in my mouth, chewing, but its difficult for me to swallow any food. I can drink liquids fine, but when I chew food, or even smell food I get a feeling that i'm going to be sick. This will usually happen for about 3 days when it happens. I'm really hungry, but the though, smell, and sometimes taste of food makes me feel like I will puke if I eat. Now, i'm not a large person, so this does have a significant effect on me. It is a terrible feeling, and I am scheduled to see a doctor in a few days, but I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of anything like this before? Thanks for the help!

This sounds either related to anxiety or menstrual, I get like that at times and when I was going through a great deal of stress, just the texture of food in itself was enough to gag me, I would actually spit it out. My mind thought I wanted certain foods, but once it reached my mouth, I would gag to the point I felt like I was going to be sick.

This happened to me especially after having my daughter, so I wondered if it was also hormonal related, and now at age 41, especially every so many periods apart, I will endure a similar feeling of thinking I want something, go to eat it and nearly gag.

Stress definitely causes this because when I was going through a rough time, even not near my cycle, I had this happen. Still does every so often.
The swallowing issues came then too, my muscles would tighten and it would feel like I couldn't swallow the food, had to spit it out. It is a form of anxiety. I had that since childhood, sounds strange but even back then I had a form of anxiety.

Possibly you are experiencing a form of anxiety "that you may not even know is there" . Maybe the doc can give you lexapro or anti depressant to see if it helps any.
With me, I notice the older I get the less it happens. And when it does happen, I just drink ginger ale and I will eat something that is easy to get down like soup or something that isn't so dry or too much texture.

Hope this helps, and it is so weird because when I read your post I remember as a kid about 8 yrs old, mom gave me a hot dog and soda, and I told her I couldn't swallow the hot dog, she got so mad at me and yelled "SWALLOW IT!" I said "I CANT!" I spit it in a napkin. And this took place at the dinner table from time to time, she never understood it, she asked the doctor and he just told her it was a form of anxiety, the muscles in my throat would not relax enough.
That was the first thing that came to mind when I read your post. Wow, and I thought my memory was going!
Hugs
Karen

This could be a food allergy - my sister is allergic to any food containing wheat and you would be surprised at the things she can't eat - she is paper thin but if she happens to eat something that contains wheat she gets incredible stomache aches and tends to be turned off of food for a while also, good luck with your appointment - keep us informed.
