The best thing you can get OTC is a med with Dextromethorphan (Cough Supressant) and Diphenhydramine (antihistamine/sleep aid). If your cough is productive you might try something with Guaifenesin in it, which is an expectorant- makes your mucus less viscous so you can cough it up better.
If you go to the doctor you can get some Tussionex. That's some good stuff, but it's by prescription only.
Make sure you elevate your head. That helps with the coughing. As long as you know it isn't from asthma, pneumonia, or bronchitis, take some Nyquil.
Delsym..... my daughter had strep and at the end of the cold that was left over, the cough she had was persistant at night to the point where she couldn't sleep, someone told me to get Delsym, it is $10 a bottle but boy did it subside the cough!
