If Bats are carriers of rabies in Uk (EBLV2) then why are they a protected speci!

Question: Bats pose absolutely no threat to people. Bats in this country do not attack members f the public. The man you're referring to was a bat handler, his death was an unfortunate but isolated event. That doesn't really justify targetting a whole (endangered) species now, does it?

they help control insect populations and their poo makes good fertilizer

Eradicating dogs would also help prevent rabies, since most infections are contracted from dogs.

Since the mammal vectors are unwilling carriers it might seem a little more controversial than say, wiping out smallpox.

Because they put a big dent in the insect population.
