Smoking and Accutane( Need a GOOD Answer)?!

Question: I recently started taking Accutane orally and I was wondering if I can keep smoking cigarettes while on it. Will it interfere with the medication in anyway or cause unwanted side effects? I'm not a heavy smoker.I only smoke about 1 or 2 cigs a day, maybe 1 in a couple of days.

Please I really need to know this.

It shouldn't effect the effectiveness of the drug. However, it *will* likely increase the side effects to the eyes and nose, and lips. Smoking causes the skin and lips to be drier, the eyes to be drier (and more sensitive), and the nose to be drier. Accutane will *greatly* exacerbate this. So, it may be more difficult for you to tolerate the medication. This may be a good time for you consider Chantix. Chantix is a new drug that helps to kill nicotine cravings. Recent studies also indicate that it's easier to quit smoking if you start using a nicotine patch shortly before (a week or so) before you actually quit.

There have also been recent studies which demonstrate that smoking does contribute to acne (don't laugh -- it's because smoking damages the microcirculatory system, which makes it more difficult for oxygen and antibodies to reach the skin, making infections, like acne, easier to take hold). This is part of the reason why smokers have more bronchitis, more sinus infections ... and more acne. Since you only smoke such a small number of cigarettes, Chantix may not be necessary, only nicotine gum/patches. Smoking while on Accutane would be unpleasant, at best. However, I wouldn't let it stop you from taking the medication. Long-term scarring would be worse.
