I'd be quite reluctant to start a statin at your age, especially if you're female, unless you had a very high cholesterol level!. I'm making the assumption that you are a type 1 diabetic, based on your age, and in this instance, altered cholesterol levels are less common than in type 2 diabetes!. I agree, most of the evidence lies in people over the age of 40, and evidence for statins in younger age groups is almost exclusively for familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH)!.
Double check with your GP about your cholesterol levels, and if they are not in FH range, I would defer your statin therapy until you're older, or have other risk factors, ie high blood pressure, protein loss in the urine, or if you take up smoking!. Unfortunately, due to government initiatives, GPs have a financial incentive to lower cholesterol levels in diabetics, irrespective of age and evidence!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

As far as i know statins aren't more or less effective based on the age of the patient!. I too am diabetic and was prescribed statins, but was unable to take them!. My body didn't tolerate them so that course of treatment was stopped!.
The only advice that I can give you is that side effects or not,any drug that can help you stop the ravages of diabetes is worth taking!.
As you get older more health problems will arise from your diabetes!. Any medication that can stop or delay the onset of these problems is worthwhile!. I'm 43 and have an assortment of health problems because i wasn't able to control my diabetes!. In my case my kidneys failed, and I now need dialysis 3 times a week!. Other people are suffering through amputations, heart problems, and blindness because of diabetes!. Do whatever you can to get control over your diabetes!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

if you don't have to inject insulin then I would try changing your diet to improve your diabetesWww@Answer-Health@Com

statins are used against cholersterol - but in the uk it is recommened that all diabetics take statins!. Cholesterol levels have to be lower for diabetics than for "normal" folk!.

If you can stomach them - all well and good - but some of us have reactions against them - muscle ache - depression etc!. I have such bad side effects that I cannot get out off the sofa for muscle pain

As you are so young try to avoid fatty foods - butter - cheese - fatty meats - junk foods - watch your weight!. As a diabetic you have to put enough in your body - try for a while without statins!.!.!. read on the net ways of controlling cholesterol - and see if that makes a difference!. More exercise helps greatly too!. Some doctors in the UK love to prescribe Statins becaue they have been told to do so, without weighing up the adverse effects and natural ways to control the problemWww@Answer-Health@Com

Statin treatment has nothing to do with regulating your blood sugar level, but it is suggested to prevent a heart attack or a stroke!.
It seems that people with diabetes are up to four times more likely to suffer a major event involving the circulation - for example a heart attack or a stroke!.
In fact, coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in people who have Type 2 diabetes!.
All this means it's now recognised that diabetes, particularly Type 2, is as much a disease of the circulatory system as it is of blood!. That's why doctors prescribe statin treatment but you are too young to take statins!.
As a matter of fact it isn't suggested that people under 40 will benefit from taking a statin!.
Only people with diabetes over the age of 50 should consider taking statins to prevent the cardiovascular risk of diabetes but even in those cases some factors must be considered that is to say not all people over the age of 50 with diabetes have the same cardiovascular risk ( if smokers not all the smokers have high blood pressure and not all people with diabetes are overweight)!. In other words it isn't true everyone should take statins!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes it is worth it!. Your doctor knows what he is doing!. The good out weighs the bad with these drugs!. And the drug manufacturers have to list every little thing that happened to every person that took part in the study!.!.!.!.!.even if it was a broken fingernail!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Statin drugs are for high cholesterol!. Why would your doctor give you this for diabetes!?!?!?!?!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

You didnt mention your weight, is this a factor, is it hereditary, not enough info, but my rellies have had diabeties and dies through one thing or another, amputation, stroke, etc!., its serious, dont question your doctor, do what he says and try to stick with it, babies get it too so age is no consideration, listen to what the doc says and do it, have a step son who wont listen and they say he wont reach 30 cause he just does his own thing and doesnt worry about the consequences, he has a daughter and another one one the way, why is he being selfish, I just dont know, but each to their own, I hope you will be ok, goodluck!Www@Answer-Health@Com
