Question: I just heard through the grapevine that an ex lover has hepititus!?
I have no way of contacting him and I do not know which form of hep he has!. I have been vacinated against hep B, but we did do unprotective sex of everykind, so that still leaves me at risk of hep A and C!. I dont want to go the GUM clinic!.

Shall I just ask my gp if he could do a blood test for hep!? and how should I approach it!?
how likely am I to have caught anything!?
any advise much appreciated!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
There are seven or more forms of hepatitis and the means of spread is different for different types!. Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are spread by blood and body fluids contact and Hepatitis A is spread by what is called the fecal/oral route!.

Blood and body fluid spread require close contact with secretions like semen, vaginal fluid, spinal fluid, and of course blood!. They can be spread by simple contact of one of these fluids with any break in the skin, through needles, by sexual contact, by transfusion and so forth!.

Fecal/oral spread happens because the organism is present in the digestive system which then contaminates food or water and this is consumed by another person who will then contract the infection!. Obviously, poor hygiene is a big factor in this kind of spread!.

Currently we have blood tests in common use to detect Hepatitis A, B, and C!. There are vaccines to help prevent HepA and HepB, but none yet for HepC, HepD, or or any of the others!.

In addition to the hepatitis infection itself, which can be life-threatening, having hepatitis greatly increases the risk of developing liver failure or liver cancer!.

What are the symptoms of hepatitis!?

Acute hepatitis

The symptoms of acute hepatitis vary considerably from person to person!. Some patients have no symptoms at all, and in most cases, children only show mild symptoms!.

In the early stages:
-tiredness, general malaise, slight fever
-nausea, poor appetite, changes in taste perception
-pressure or pain below the right ribs caused by an enlarged liver
-aching muscles and joints, headache, skin rash!.

The jaundice phase:
-yellowing of sclerae (the white portions of the eyes), skin and mucous membranes
-dark urine
-light-coloured stools

(around this time, the other symptoms subside)

The recovery phase:
-tiredness that can last for weeks!.

Chronic hepatitis

-Many patients have no symptoms!.
-Tiredness, an increased need for sleep, aching muscles and joints!.
-Periodic light pressure or pain below the right ribs - enlarged liver!.
-Jaundice is a very late symptom of chronic hepatitis!. It is a sign that the disease has become serious!.

How is hepatitis treated!?

-No medical treatment is available for acute viral hepatitis!.
-Chronic hepatitis B can be treated with interferon alfa or lamivudine (Zeffix)!.
-Chronic hepatitis C can be treated with interferon alfa and ribavirin (tribavirin)!.
-Autoimmune hepatitis can by treated with corticosteroids!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i would go and get checked just in case
there could be a possibility that you have it, but its not definite!. you have no way of knowing whether or not he got it before or after he was with you!.
getting checked will be good anyway, just to make sure!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hep can be passed sexually, but it is very rare!. There has to be blood exchanged!. It is almost always passed by sharing needles, and getting it from contaminated blood or blood supplies through donated blood!. It is still safest to have yourself checked,!. I would just tell your GP the truth!. An old lover has some kind of hep, and could you please be tested!. It is a quick and easy blood test and would put your mind at rest!. In the future, practice safe sex!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
