Answers:
Lupus occurs when a person's immune system is both confused and overactive!. Lupus is extremely complex, and doctors say if you understand lupus then you understand the immune system!.

Lupus patients make antibodies against their own healthy cells or parts of the cells!. They also make antibodies against cell debris left over when a cells normally, as they all do!. Not all lupus patients have the same antibodies!. Some have antinuclear antibodies, some have anti double stranded DNA, some have antiRo, antiLa or antiSmith!. Some make antibodies against their own blood cells or their bone marrow!.

The antibodies tell other immune cells to eat this cells that are part of the person!. When that happens, large molecules are formed that cause inflammation in parts of the body!. These molecules should be dumped in the spleen to be broken down, but the part of the immune system that is supposed to take them there, is also confused and leaves the garbage all over the body, causing inflammation, pain, organ damage, and occasionally death!.

Still others have antiphospholipid anitbody syndrome which includes anticardiolipin and lupus anticoagulant!. This causes platelets in the blood to clump together and can cause stroke, heart attack, or miscarriage!.

Antibodies can attack central nervous system causing seizures!.

The cause is not known!. Researchers believe that first, a person has to have a genetic predisposition to lupus and then some trigger has to switch it on!. They know some triggers and only suspect others!.

There is no cure!. The treatment goal is to minimize the symptoms (pain and inflammation) and prevent permanent organ damage!. This is done with immunosuppressive drugs, all of which have serious side effects!. It is up to each patient and their doctor to explore the risks vs!. benefits of the various treatments!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
