Question: I recently had an mri of my pituitary gland to look for tumor!. Dr said scan was normal!.!?
Even though the scan was normal they want to do another one with contrast!. Should I be nervous and are they looking for something!? I suffer from infertility and missed periods!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
They are probably looking for a prolactinoma!. It is a tumor, usually benign and very very small, that overproduces prolactin!. An excess of prolactin can cause irregular periods, infertility, and a milky nipple discharge!.
The scan with contrast will give your doctor a better view of the pituitary!. If a prolactinoma is found, it will be tiny (especially since it wasn't seen the first time), and your doctor would try medication to keep it under control before even thinking surgery!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

When it comes to medical testing, my motto is not to worry until the doctors give you something to worry about!.

My guess (I'm not a medical professional) is that there exist some tumors or other pituitary problems which don't show up on a standard MRI but are apparent on a contrast MRI!.

That doesn't mean you have such a problem!. So take it easy unless they give you a solid, worry-worthy diagnosis!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Being nervous will accomplish nothing!. They may have a real concern they have not shared with you!.

Often doctors fail to share concerns that have no clear basis in evidence!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Impossible not to be nervous but let me tell you that it's actually procedure to have more than one MRI done or other type of x-ray when your dealing with something as serious as a tumor!. They're just taking extra precaution to make sure nothing is there!. Of course if nothing is present, it would still be necessary for you to have a check up on the area at least three months later to make sure everything is still good!.

I recently had a scare myself and within a month I must have gone back three-four times for MRI's and other x-rays!. Thought I had a tumor in my leg!. Being a former cancer survivor I had to take it seriously!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

different mri scans can show different things!. depending on what they focus on, some structures can be more clear!. for instance in one scan the eyes may seem like a grey blur with all the other tissue!. a scan of the same area focussed differently may show the eyes lit up bright white and more visible when compared to other structures!. i use that as an example!. the contrast will alow them to more clearly see structures that may not have shown up as clear without contrast!. by that same thought, other structures show up better without contrast and worse with contrast!. no need to worry yet!. good luck!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
