You should get a book on general nutrition for diabetics, type 2, but don't buy in to the no-carb thing!.

You need to start reading labels!. First look at the serving size, as the majority of the time the amount we consider a 'serving' is about 2 regular servings!. So if you measure out two servings, double all other nutritional amounts!. For diabetics, look next at the total carbs, next subtract the amount of fiber (as fiber is not a sugar and doesn't count in terms of carb counting), that is the number you need to know!. Anything where it has the 'sugar' carbs as being more than half of what the total carbs are - you should stay away from!.

You need to eat the foods that we all should be eating - vegetables, lean meats, nuts, fruit!. Limit the amount of refined sugar and stick to whole grains in bread, brown rice, and whole wheat pasta!. Also limit dried fruit and juices as they are good for you, but have a lot of sugar!.

Eat regularly and if you need to 'splurge' on a high fat or sugar item, make it count and make it small - meaning have a small cup of your favorite thing, don't waste the splurge on a quick snack you are eating because it is fast or cheap or just because it is there!.

I think if you start with that, you can learn as you go!. For instance, there are several veggies and fruits that are great for you, but have more sugar and carbs than others - peas, potatoes, corn, bananas, etc!. But since it is a lot to process and most of the time involves big changes in eating habits, I think that if you started concentrating on the lean meats and whole grains you will be able to transition better!.

Then you can start worrying about the more complex stuff like glycemic index and such!. Try to stay away from processed foods and when eating out, get grilled chicken or fish and veggies!.

You want foods that have carbs: nuts, grains, bread, so forth!.
I think it depends on the person, but if you get too low of blood sugar, you can get shaky and have a seizure!. I forget what happens if you get too high of blood sugar!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You can really have anything you want!. It just depends on timing!. You want to assure that when you take in the majority of your carbs is when your medication is peaking!.

My son has had type 1 since he was 13 months old!.

Because he is on insulin, he needs to eat every 2 hours from 8am to 8pm and often in the middle of the night!. I have to give him carbs to cover each dip in the insulin!. So when he wants cake!.!.!. we have it at one of those 2 hour marks!.

Carbs are really not that hard to figure out!. It is just timing and portions!.!.!.!. there are really no foods that you can not have!.

good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Go get a copy of South Beach Diet!. It will teach you about good and bad carbs and even list things you can and cannot eat!. It is not an exhange diet, does not count calories or carbs!. It's a healthy safe diet for diabetics to use!. Just skip phase one and use phase two and three!. You can get a paperback copy at Walmart For about $12!.00!. My nutrtionist suggested it!. This diet really helps keep sugar readings where they should be!. You should also get a dietitian or nutritionist to help you with things!. If you are type 2, don't listen to those that tell you that you can eat anything you want, that is not true, there are actually things you have to stay away from!. You must learn how different foods affect your own body!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

my doctor put me on a max of 60 carbs per meal 3 times a day!. always check the nutrition lables on foods that you buy!. I set myself a goal on the sugar intake on the lables!.!. nothing over 12 grms of sugar and i use splenda and i drink diet drinks!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
