My 3 year old son has had a fever for 3 days now.?!

Question: My 3 year old son has had a fever for 3 days now!.!?
We had him to the Dr yesterday because his fever went up to 104!.2!. So she checked him out no ear infections but he had some spots and redness in the back of his throat !. So they did a strep test and it came back negative!. She said it is just a virus and he will be fine and to keep giving him tylenol and motrin!. During the day he is very active and doesnt act sick at all hes eating ok and has been drinking like crazy so I am happy with that!. But at night his fever flares up and he is just like motionless!. So my question is if it isnt ear infections or strep, How long can this fever last for!? Or should it have gone away by now!? and also since I took him to the dr after 24 hours of fever can strep or ear infections still occur and I just brought him to the dr to early!? I get really nervous when he is sick and have a million questions and I would like to call the dr right now and ask but it is late and I know I wont be able to sleep if I dont get any answers!. Thankyou all for reading!Www@Answer-Health@Com

A viral infection can certainly cause episodic fevers in a little one, without really making them sick otherwise!. Fever is a defense of the immune system, a good one actually!. The body cells function quite well in the higher temperature, but the virus or bacteria can't!. They have a hard time with normal function, and can't reproduce- it limits the total numbers while the immune system tracks them down and destroys them!. As long as the temperature comes down to below 102 with the Tylenol and Motrin, and he's drinking plenty, he should do fine!. Viral infections can last up to two weeks in some cases, and your doctor has eliminated the items of greatest concern- ear infections and strep!. Kids tolerate fevers a lot better than we adults do- and they also do tend to catch these weird viral illnesses!. Mostly they do just fine, and the worst of the damage is to mom's peace of mind!. As long as he's still drinking enough fluid to go to the bathroom every 3-4 hours, is still eating well, and aside from the fever is generally okay, I think you can relax a bit!. Well, as much as a mom can! Anyway, it will probably disappear as quickly as it started, they usually do!. Just be sure he's eating a good diet, push the liquids, keep tabs on the temperature, and try to keep him somewhat resting!. You might even get a mystery rash out of this, as that is sometimes the next thing to show with these type viruses!. It won't bother him particularly, it won't itch or anything!. Meantime, just trust your gut!. You will know when something isn't right with your child, and when it's time to go see the doctor again!. I've been in your shoes with all of mine, and plenty of others- just one small reason why the hair is going grey!. Hang in there, it will pass!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Your son shouldn't need to go to a hospital unless his temp spikes to 106!. Keep on doing what you're doing!. At night, keep him cool!. Let him sit in a tepid bath for 20 minutes and sponge him all over with water!. Let him sit up until bedtime with a popsicle or cold drink while you read to him or engage in any quiet activity!. If his temp elevates, you can wrap ice packs in small towels and place them at his armpits and groin!. You can use a fan!. Make him as comfortable as you can!. Viral infections can last up to two weeks but chances are your son's fever won't go on for much longer!. Continue alternating the Tylenol & Motrin!. You're doing everything right and as far as I can tell your instincts are good!. I would suggest that you keep him more quiet and less active during his waking hours until he's better!. It's unlikely that after a negative strep he will develop strep and otitis media (ear infection) is more likely to occur with a respiratory viral infection!.

He'll be fine!. Look in on him now and then get some much needed sleep!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You are a good mother to be so cancerned!. I have two children and I worry too!. They are 10 and 14, and have all sorts of illnessness and wounds and they are all difficult!. We are lucky they were all minor, you are doing fine!.
You should always trust your gut if you feel something is really wrong or you do not feel comfortable with the doctor!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
