Alright, I deal with it every day, and pneumonia is very contagious, as a nurse in the ICU, it is the main reason patients are on the ventilator!. Depending on what bacteria has populated the lungs and caused the infection drives the mode of treatment, and decides on the level of Isolation that patient requires!. Patients who have a type of staph infection in their lungs requires everyone that goes into that room wear gowns, gloves, and masks!. There are even specific protocols to prevent the spread of pneumonia to patients on the ventilator who do not have it!. Take all the antibiotics prescribed to you!. Cover your mouth when you cough, and wash your hands frequently!. Pneumonia is serious, and can be life threatening in certain situations!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
Pneumonia in and of itself is not contagious, but its a secondary infection caused by other things!. (usually Strep or something else along those lines) And the primary infection is very much contagious, even after it has turned into full-blown pneumonia!. If its bacterial, anti-biotic will kill all chances of it being passed along within 24 hours, if its viral, be careful around people for at least 5 days!.
