Answers:
it's very interesting to me

i have people in my life who go into remission for a short period of time then it's back
other people who have had it in remission for years and years

i think that if we continue research we might be able to look for and find those little things that show us 'how much' remission we are talking about

it's a werid thing
hard for me to get my head wrapped around itWww@Answer-Health@Com

This is my OPINION, I am not a doctor, though am trying to become one!. I believe that it is possible to have:

1) Cancer in your body and it not affect you badly or so that will be obvious to you and live years with it

2) I believe if you continuing doing something that causes cancer, such as smoking or eating foods or living in a cancer causing environment then you will have a greater chance of remission!.

3) I believe that with correct diet, exercise and good thoughts/prayer, you can prevent or cure just about anything!.

again my OPINION!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My mom had breast cancer (1 1/2 yrs off treatment) and my niece has leukemia (in remission but still 2 years of chemo left)!. The fear of the cancer coming back is normal!. We seem to get a scare everytime something abnormal pops up because we fear it is the cancer returning!. The fear of course is that the chemo didn't kill all the cancer cells!.
As far as my opinion on remission!.!.!.!.I believe both things you mentioned can happen!. Sometimes the chemo does not kill every cancer cell and a few remain and are left to multiply again!. Other times, as with my mom, the chemo did it's job and killed all the cancer but her body formed a new primary breast cancer tumor in the opposite breast 12 years after her original diagnosis!. The docs compared the properties of the new tumor against the properties of her original tumor and confirmed it was not a recurrence because they were completely different!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sandcastle,
First of all, congratulations on your first two years!!

In oncology, the working definition of remission is a disease which is so low that it can't be detected!. In other words, they don't have tests sensitive enough to find it!.

Most cancer treatments will continue for several treatments after remission is obtained!. This is to try to kill off the remaining hidden cells!. Eventually they stop the treatment (chemo usually) for two reasons: 1!. Chemo has risks 2!. You may already be cured!. A certain percentage of patients are, and that percentage gets higher every year with some cancers!.

The definition of 'cure' is a remission that goes on forever!. The longer you are in remisson, the more likely it is that you are cured!. 5 years is a generally accepted dividing line, but is not a guarantee!. At some point it can indeed completely gone!. Plan for it!

Best of luck to you!.

It depends on the kind of cancer you have had!. I had the apl form of aml leukemia and I went into remission in 2 months flat!. I will soon be coming up on a year since diagnosis and then 2 months after that I will have another bone marrow test to see if the leukemia has come back!. I think my God above has healed me because my blood counts have been at the best in years!. I have even have had major surgery and lost a lot of blood and it didn't bring it down any!.I wish you luck and will be praying for you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

when they say your cancer is in remission, what they are saying is!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.That the machines have not picked up any more tumours growing, hence your in remission, but what they don't tell you is that those machines can't pick up on single cell cancer which is disguised as white blood cells and are quietly moving around your body to another position!. So please don't get your hopes up too much, or you will be in for a great fall and depression when you discover another tumour has formed!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I dont think its a case of 'does the cancer leave ', my hubby was 34 when diagnosed, 2 yrs ago, and he's still goin through treatment!. Its all good scan wise, but he agrees, the knowledge of having been through cancer 1st hand will never leave, and it will always be there in the back of his/our minds!. I'm not trying to pesimistic, but I'm sure you'll agree, life as you knew it, before cancer, is not the same!. You just have to start to come to terms with the new 'normal'!. You can beat cancer, but the thought of it will always be lurking in the background!. But that does not mean it will return!! Keep positive and kick that muther fu**kers ***!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

My guess is that cancer is a result of a viral agent that is kept in check by a healthy immune system!. So I think that virtually every human has the capacity to develop cancer!. Certain substances weaken or upset the balance of our bodies and contribute to the cancer over taking or mutating into a non-remission state!. I wonder if there are people living with cancer for years who do not know it that if they were given a thorough testing would then be diagnosed and treated!? Would they then live longer or short lives due to the treatment!?

Most importantly, consult your physician they should be able to offer you the most scientific evident guidance towards good health choice or advice!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The cancer is gone after treatment!. It mostly stays away!. But as time goes on science finds ways of curing it!. Now they are working on something that searches the entire body for cancer cells and then destroys them!. That process will have no side effects and will be available soon!. It was on a tv recently!. Stop worrying about it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

it depends (this is the answer to every question) it is possible that the cancer is destroyed and a second cancer forms and it is also possible that the cancer never leaves it is just in small enough numbers we dont detect it!. it comes down to a case by case basisWww@Answer-Health@Com

My feelings about remission, are that there is a possibility the cancer may re-occur in the future, however, at this time the cancer is not moving, spreading, or causing harm to ones body!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am not a doctor, but I have always felt it is still present

in your system and could recur!. There are a lot of cases

though in which it doesn't!. I have heard of cases where,

through prayer and belief in your higher power, it goes away!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

that's a good question!. since it's a mulitply of cells that don't know when to stop the potential for it to happen again is always there!. it's just waiting to be triggered!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

All I know is that my mother died of cancer at that she did have a remission session but I just think in the end!.!.cancer is way too strong for the human body and in the end!. It can win!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am pretty confident mine is gone after 19 years in remission!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I would say Nothing is Impossible!!
One day Science will cure permanantly the Cancer thing!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

There are over 200 different types of cancer and as many subtypes !. !. some cancers are far more aggressive and life threatening than the slower cancers !. !. so your question is not really possible to answer!. If you have a slow growing cancer !. !. you may well outlive your remisission !. !. too !. !.if you had a very small stage 1 or stage 2 cancer !. !. you may not only be in remission but potentially 'cured'!. Cancer can reoccur in many of the aggressive types of disease because it has never really 'gone away' !. !. since cancer starts in microscopic cells !. !. they can co-exist for a very long time in the body before detection!. Cancer needs to grow to be found !. !. so in some cases of cancer !. !. the growth rate may have been slowed down by treatment !. !. or even more insideous !. !. cancer cells have the ability to mutate !. !. so the initial treatment rids the body of the first mutated cancer !. !. but cannot stop or slow down the new mutation!. Cancer is extremely complex !. !. as it has the ability to adapt and change and mutate !. !. which is why it seems to 'reoccur' !. Remission is complex also !. !. it is certainly possible since we know people who are long time survivors of metastatic disease!. So !. !. I believe from everything that I have seen of advanced cancer !. !. that it is too small to be detected !.!. that growth rates vary by individual !. !. meaning that remissions can last for years and than the cancer reappears (in cases I've seen the cancer has mutated and than built up a resistance to treatment making further options limited)!. Fortunately treatments are getting better, less toxic, and more tailored towards an individuals unique chemistry !. !. making remissions far longer than ever before!.
If you had an aggressive cancer you might ask your doctor about possibly using 'maintenance' drugs to help keep the cancer away!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
