Sounds like he is retaining fluid in his tissues, and is called EDEMA!. THis can be caused by such things as poor circulation, kidney disease, heart problems, too much salt in diet, and other things!. If it suddenly appeared, he should see a doctor!. Is he diabetic!? The discoloration can also be associated with poor circulation!. He should see a doctor!. Too much fluid build up can also make his blood pressure high which will in turn cause damage to his brain, heart, kidneys, eyes, and other organs!.

Your father should also prop his legs up at all times when sitting and not cross them!.

Here are some photos of edema:

Swelling of the feet is one of the hallmark signs of diabetes and congestive heart failure!. Your father needs to be evaluated by a cardiologist and receive a thorough work-up for diabetes!. The "bruising" could be indicative of gout, which is a form of arthritis due to a buildup of uric acid in the blood -- gout typically shows up first in the feet, usually in a big toe and is very painful!. The fact that your father has high blood pressure makes congestive heart failure more likely!. He needs to be seen by a doctor as soon as possible!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sounds like he has peripheral edema, which means he is retaining fluid!. Have Dad prop his feet up, this will help with the swelling, you might want to get him to either cut back on the salt intake or talk to his doctor about putting him on Lasix, this will help him get rid of the excess fluid!. This may also be poor circulation, I'd take DAD to the doctor at any rate!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It could be gout or poor circulation!. Make a Doctor appointment!Www@Answer-Health@Com
