I hope I can provide some clear thinking on this issue for you!.
There was ONE, poorly done study (1) that showed a slight increased risk for some (postmenopausal) women!. However, this poor study was 'debunked' by leading researchers at Harvard Medical School in a properly performed study that found a DECREASED risk of some types of breast cancer (2)!.
The findings of the first study are not valid because they looked at grapefruit intake but did NOT consider grapefruit juice intake! The failure to consider this second common source of grapfruit virtually invalidates their findings!.
The Harvard researchers looked at both grapefruit and grapefruit juice intake in women in the Nurses Health Study!. Here is what they found:
"No association was observed in women with estrogen and progesterone receptor positive cancers!. However, in women with estrogen and progesterone receptor negative cancers, there was a significant DECREASE in breast cancer risk with increased consumption of grapfruit !.!.!. (a 40% decrease!)!."
They conclude: "Our findings do NOT support an adverse effect of consumption of grapefruit or grapefruit juice on risk of breast cancer or on endogenous hormone levels!."Www@Answer-Health@Com
