Causes

Most of the time, the cause of the cardiomyopathy is unknown!. In some people, however, doctors are able to identify some contributing factors!. Possible causes of cardiomyopathy include:

Long-term high blood pressure
Heart valve problems
Heart tissue damage from a previous heart attack
Chronic rapid heart rate
Metabolic disorders, such as thyroid disease or diabetes
Nutritional deficiencies of essential vitamins or minerals, such as thiamin (vitamin B-1), selenium, calcium and magnesium
Pregnancy
Excessive use of alcohol over many years
Abuse of cocaine or antidepressant medications, such as tricyclic antidepressants
Use of some chemotherapy drugs to treat cancer
Certain viral infections, which may injure the heart and trigger cardiomyopathy
Hemochromatosis is a disorder in which your body doesn't properly metabolize iron, causing it to build up in various organs, including your heart muscle!. This can lead to a weakening of the heart muscle, resulting in dilated cardiomyopathy!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

A cardiomyopathy is at the most basic level, a sick heart!. Anything that compromises the heart's ability to function as an effective pump causes a cardiomyopathy!.

Examples:

Heart disease blocking oxygen to the heart muscle causing a heart attack, and depressing heart function can cause an ischemic cardiomyopathy!. Or a heart muscle that is weak because of poorly controlled blood pressure causing the heart to balloon out, and then no longer has the ability to pump strongly is a non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy!. This type can also be caused by certain viral or bacterial illnesses, and some types of chemotherapy!.

A heart that has an abnormal rhythm, either too slow, too fast, irregular, etc!. Or a heart that has really bad valves that are either too narrow or leak badly can cause a cardiomyopathy too!.

A heart muscle that is too stiff with an inability to relax to allow blood to fill back into the chambers before being pumped again can be caused by a cardiomyopathy known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy!.

This is just touching the tip!. Put "cardiomyopathy" in your search engine, you'll find all sorts of info!.
