Firstly don't panic it is quite controllable with certain medication!.
Factor V Leiden is not a disease!.It is the presence of a particular gene which is passed on from one or both parents!.
A varient of the protein Factor V (5) which is needed for blood clotting!. With Factor V deficiency people bleed badly whereas people with Factor V Leiden have blood which has an increased tendency to clot!.
It can be treated with anticoagulants which help to thin the blood!.
Once your wife is on the medication she should be fine!. It will mean frequent blood tests to make sure that the strength of the anticoagulant being gives remains correct but that is small price to pay for the continuation of a normal healthy life!.
