Why do I keep smelling smoke?!

Question: Why do I keep smelling smoke!?
For about the past week, I keep smelling smoke in our house!. No one else smells it, but to me it's very strong--so strong that I wonder why the smoke detectors aren't going off!. I have gone through every room trying to find something that might have a lingering smoke smell, but haven't found anything!. No one here smokes, and no one who smokes has been in the house since last Thanksgiving, and then they didn't smoke!. It gets so bad at night that I smear Vicks Vaporub all over my nose so I don't smell it!.
Am I crazy, or do I have some wacko medical condition!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

The question here to is find out if you only smell the smoke in your house!.!.!.or do you occasionally smell it other places too!? This is important because certain viral and even bacterial infections in your nasal passage can affect your scent receptors making you think that you smell odors that aren't really there!. For instance, whenever I have a minor cold or such, everything seems to smell the same -- provided that it has an odor! So a rose, or perfume, or cooking scents!.!.!.all smell the same to me!.!.!.usually also a burnt scent!.!.!.but this goes away after I get better!. Every time I get some type of respiratory illness, even if it's just the sniffles, this happens!. Supposedly, some people are more prone to this problem than others!.!.!.and for myself!.!.!.it may even occur when other symptoms haven't even progressed yet -- so it seems that the only difference to me is the smell!. Technically, this is a form of an "Olfactory Hallucination" -- a smell that is perceived, but not really there-- or it is altered from what it 'should' smell like!. That's at leas ONE possibility!. Good Luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

it is possible that you have a medical problem!. before i was diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy, i kept smelling ammonia!. it drove me crazy!. like you, i went around trying to find where it was coming from!. nobody else smelled it!.
when i mentioned it to my doctor, he immediately sent me for some neurological testing including a sleep deprived eeg!. they told me this was a form of a seizure or a warning that preceeds a seizure!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My question is, did you have a smoker in your family just die!?

After my aunt lost my cousin in a very tragic accident, my cousin came back and haunted her!. I'm serious!.He was a major heavy smoker and people would smell it at random times!.

My other question is, so you have a spouce or child that smokes and is keeping it hidden from you!. Then they may deny all traces of it as well!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I totally agree with teachr!. I myself have had the smell of things that are not there!. Mine was brought on by my dad's death!. I was smelling the flowers that were in the funeral room!.It is not unusual!. It was the emotional effects that caused it!. You did not say whether anyone may have smoked while visiting or how long you have lived there!. Smoking has a way of lingering-on walls, curtains, and even furnitures!. You could be very sensitive to smells!. You are not crazy!. My mom washed her walls and found a crummy brownish yellow in the wash water!. Hope this puts you a little more feeling"normal"!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Phantosmia is the phenomenon of smelling odors that aren't really present!. It is different from parosmia, in which a smell is actually present, but perceived differently from its usual smell!.

Don't freak me out!. I have been experiencing the exact same thing beginning in my car about four days ago beginning with my break lights not working!. I got the problem repaired and asked the mechanic if he smelled smoke in my car!. Then this morning I smelled smoke in my house too!. Yet there was none!. I mean none!. I don't smoke either!. This is weird that you have been sensing this too!. I am 53 and have never experienced this phenomenon every before!.
