There was a ring around a rosy bump all over!.

Pockets full of posy
They thought that they could cure the plague by making sweet smelling air!.

In the terminal phases of the disease, victims would be hemorrhaging internally, sometimes triggering sneezing as it irritated the breathing passages!. "Ashes" is a child's approximation of a paroxysm of sneezing!. In this weakened state, a victim could, and often did, sneeze their lungs out!. Messy!.!.!.

We all fall down!.
Everyone dies from the plague!.

As you can see this is not a meaningless song for kids, its a song about death!.

I didn't know this! Thanks for the info!. Why do so many children's songs and rhymes have themes and lyrics that are so dreadful!? Example: Rock a bye baby: When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall!. And down will come baby, cradle and all"!. Hmmmm!.!.!.!.!.!. what a wonderful song to sing your baby to sleep to!. Well I learned this in 5th grade!. It is sad and I have no idea how it became a playful song!. I used to love Ring around the Rosy!. It's actually like really sad!.!.!. think about everyone who actually died during that time!. Pitiful whoever made this up!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I thought they had pockets full of posies because they wouldn't bathe and they wanted to smell better!. They thought that if they bathed that it would open up their pores and let the sickness in!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Oh honey, everybody knows this one!.!.!.they run it on PBS periodically!. They didn't think they could cure the plague by making posies, they made posies to cover the smell of the dead!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Interesting!.!.!.I did not know that!. I looked up the song on Wikipedia and this is what they say near the end of the article, regarding the theory that is song is based on the Black Death (direct quote):

"Folklore scholars regard the theory as baseless for several reasons:

1!. the late appearance of the explanation means that it has no tradition, only the value of its content;[15]
2!. the facts described do not fit especially well at least with the Great Plague;[17][20]
3!. the great variety of forms makes it unlikely that the modern form is the most ancient one, and the words on which the interpretation are based are not found in many of the earliest records of the rhyme (see above);[18][21]
4!. European and 19th century versions of the rhyme suggest that this 'fall' was not a literal falling down, but a curtsy or other form of bending movement that was common in other dramatic singing games!.[22]"

Still, I guess we can't know for sure if the song is really about the Black Death or not!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
