The mental effect that herpes has on people is a much bigger problem than the physical and it is rarely talked about by the medical profession!.
There are many things that got me to the mental state that I have today and helped me overcome the depression (feeling like a leper, social outcast, tainted, etc!.) and they have also helped many others with H!.

1st, have her join support/social groups, she may feel that she doesn't need support, but it helps tremendously!!! She could go to meetings or there are tons of online support resources, chat rooms and message forums (the 1st link below has a list of support groups by state, I am an active member of 5 of them)!.!.!. I love the h-only events that my groups have and I also host h-only parties about every 2 months!. It is a great way to meet others with H and get support, plus everyone is so welcoming and understanding (everyone with H has been through the same thing she is going through)

2nd, join online date sites for people with herpes!. It might sound lame to her, but after she starts chatting with men that will not look down on her because of H she will understand how much it helps (My dad convinced me to join)!.!.!. Personally, I only dated H-only and have now found that wonderful herpes man that I was looking for!. I met him off of mphw (the 1st link will also give her a list of H-datesites) Only dating H men did NOT hinder my date life either and it made it much easier on me!.

3rd and most important, she needs to understand that SHE is not herpes, she only HAS herpes! If someone turns her away because of H it is their loss and she is better off without someone that shallow in her life!.

H is a minor skin affliction!. Its just a rash!. Its no big deal, but it has such a horrible social stigma that it causes things such as depression!.

Hope that helps! Good luck to her! If you/her need anything else or anymore info, please feel free to email me: vickimogi@yahoo!.com

Its hard!. When I was first diagnosed, I was so angry and confused and depressed and ashamed!. I was sure that no one would ever love me again!.

Now, it's over 10 years later, I've dated several guys (all of whom I told about the herpes before we had sex) and now I'm happily married!.

I suspect that your friend really needs two things - lots of RELIABLE information about her disease, and a good friend like you!.

For example, she should know that if she never ever has sex during an outbreak, and she takes antiviral drugs, and uses a condom during sex, her chances of transmitting HSV are less than 1% per year!. Anyone who cares about her at all should be willing to take a 1% chance at catching a disease that doesn't kill you, or make you infertile, or lead to other diseases, or anything!.

She should also know that LOTS of people have genital herpes!. Roughly 20% of the population in the US has genital herpes!. Most people who have it don't know that they have it - but that doesn't mean that they can't spread it around!.

I've put my fave website for reliable info below!. Be careful about what she thinks she "knows!." Even doctors frequently give out misinformation about herpes!. I've put my fave website for herpes below!. She might find it helpful!.

Second, she needs you to be her friend!. Just listen to her!. Hear her frustration!. Reassure her that she is a desirable, wonderful woman - and will continue to be so!.

Millions of people live with Herpes!. One in EVERY four people have Herpes Simplex 1, which manifests itself as cold sores!. It is highly contageous and spreading unchecked!.

Assuming your friend has been diagnosed with Herpes Simplex 2, please tell her that with medication, vigilence, an understanding partner, and the use of condoms EVERY time, she can have a full life!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sorry mate, no sympothy there!.!. It's not like getting cancer or having a brain tumor or going blind!.!.!. Many people stay possitive when much worse happens to them!.!.!. Really herpes is not that big of a deal, it does not effect or hinder a great deal of things we do in life!.

There is an online support forum that has been great!. You can ask questions and discuss emotional issues!. They've been a great help, especially as I don't have any in-person friends who have it!

Plenty of people live with it and just learn to deal with it and go on with life!. It's something they adapt to like anything else!. I abstain solely because people aren't to be trusted!. I would have to know someone for a long time get to know them!. Aids are the worse, they are the "Why Me Jesus Disease"!. Thank God she escaped that fate!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think the best way to go on living after being diagnosed with Herpes, is just that!.!.!.
To go on living!.
To cope with depression check out this link
http://www!.herpes-coldsores!.com/herpes_a!.!.!.

There are support groups, and tons of useful information about how to cope with outbreaks as well as the social fall out related to having this condition!.
For support forums, try this link!.!.

I would like to point out, that there is a large percentage of the population that has either Herpes Simplex 1 or 2!. I have read some literature where the numbers could be as high as 80-90 percent if you consider HSV1 (typically cold-sores)!. Here is a link to some statistics!.
http://www!.herpes-coldsores!.com/herpes_s!.!.!.

That said, it is how the body copes with and fights the virus!. Most folks go on in life with minimal issues!. Many others have only a few outbreaks, and as time goes on, less and less outbreaks!.

And then a small percentage of sufferers, have several outbreaks a year!.

So, for each individual, they must learn to deal with the level of attacks they must endure!.

The first thing I suggest, is to REALLY LEARN about the condition so she can protect herself and others she might come in contact with!.

Here is a great informational and support related site for HERPES and it remains somewhat neutral, although it does display certain treatment options, and links to the websites selling these treatment options!. That's fine with me, since the site itself contains a wealth of support and info, regarding this WIDELY MIS-UNDERSTOOD condition!.
