Question: What is genital herpes!?

Answers:
Genital herpes is a sexually-transmitted disease caused by a virus!. The virus causes you to sometimes get sores on your genitals (or upper thighs or butt)!. The sores come and go, and they typically hurt!. They are spread through skin-to-skin contact, not fluids!. There are treatments that will reduce symptoms, but it currently has no permanent cure!.

Genital herpes does NOT lead to other bad diseases!. It won't kill you, and it won't cause infertility!.

The exact type of sores vary from person to person!. Some people get blisters!. Mine have always been more like small cuts!.

Genital herpes is not a pregnancy-related disease!. It is a sexually-transmitted disease!. Also, just having genital herpes won't hurt her baby while its in the womb!.

The biggest concern with pregancy and genital herpes is that the baby could catch her herpes as it is being born (since herpes is spread through skin-to-skin contact)!. She may choose to have a c-section to prevent that from happening!.

Be sure that your friend tells her OB/Gyn that she has genital herpes so that they can protect the baby!.

For more information on genital herpes (including some on genital herpes and pregnancy) I'd recommend the website below!. Please don't believe everything that you hear - even from doctors - about genital herpes!. There is a LOT of misinformation floating around!.

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2)!.

When signs do occur, they typically appear as one or more blisters on or around the genitals or rectum!. The blisters break, leaving tender ulcers (sores) that may take two to four weeks to heal the first time they occur!. Typically, another outbreak can appear weeks or months after the first, but it almost always is less severe and shorter than the first outbreak!. Although the infection can stay in the body indefinitely, the number of outbreaks tends to decrease over a period of years!.

There is no treatment that can cure herpes, but antiviral medications can shorten and prevent outbreaks during the period of time the person takes the medication!. In addition, daily suppressive therapy for symptomatic herpes can reduce transmission to partners!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am surprised you have not learned about STDs and STIs in school!. You should google it and learn more!. Also, talk to your friends about using proper contraception when having sex!. Even talk to your parents or teachers about safe sex and preventing STDs!. Your friend will always have Genital Herpes, and will always have a very strong possibility of spreading it to others!.
