It depends on the person, most people's immune system has made sufficient antibodies against the disease!. the test looks for these antibodies (not the virus iteself)!. About 97% of people will have enough antibodies after 3 months to be detected!. 100% after 6 months!.
the test itself is created to try to detect everyone who is positive for HIV, in doing so it may capture people who really don't have HIV (false positives)!. That is just a consequence of having a highly sensitive test, all persons that are reactive for the first test will need a confirmatory test before they are determined to have HIV!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

in 1990's the cdc states that 3 months is conculsive!.
present day- the cdc states 6 weeks may be conclusive!.!.
rapid test tend to spit out false positives alot!.!.so don't fret if you get a positive on a rapid, then you will need to take another test then you will have a confirmed result!.!.!.

hiv may not show up on a test for years so if you are concerned get tested about twice a year!. i have heard of it not showing up for as long as 10 years!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
