Question: I have a question about diabetes and pregnancy!.!.!.!?
Does having type 1 diabetes mean my daughter may not be able to have children, because of the risks involved!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
She can have children!. Health care providers no longer discourage women with diabetes from becoming pregnant!.

I became an insulin dependent diabetic (Type 1) over 20 years ago!. I have had 3 healthy children and 1 miscarriage!. It is true that being a diabetic while pregnant makes it a high risk pregnancy that must be monitored closely and normal blood sugars prior to conception and during pregnancy are of the opmost importance!. She will probably have more ultrasounds then usual to check the baby's development, size and to see if there are any abnormalities such as heart defects!.

My children weighed 7lbs 14 oz, 10 lbs 1!.6 oz and 10 lbs 5 oz!. It is common for diabetics to have high birth weight children and sometimes the baby does have complications upon delivery such as low blood sugar, jaundice, breathing problems etc!.

The American Diabetes Association has information on their website regarding diabetes and pregnancy!. So does the March of Dimes, http://www!.marchofdimes!.com/pnhec/188_10!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No, unless she has some extreme circumstances with her disease, she can have all the kids she wants to!. Just make her be sure to be in very good control of her diabetes before she gets pregnant and all through her pregnancy!. I'm sure her doctors would watch her carefully!. Many diabetics give birth to large babies!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
