Answers:
Of course, many people have phobias, some based upon bad experiences and some on irrational fears!. All are equally real to the person concerned!.

You obviously know your onions! You have seen, I am sure, T!.V!. programmes on 'aversion therapy', where a person is made to confront his/her phobia!. Common ones are fear of mice (Uhh, so little!), snakes and spiders, especially big ones! The 'victims' are made to have the creatures crawl all over them!

The people always say the same things, such as 'I can't do it!' 'I won't!', etc!. You will scream in the same way, as for any 'Room 101' syndronme!. You are no different from other people in this respect and therefore there is no reason for embarrassment!. Apologies are different!. Real friends won't mind!.

After a short while patients usually 'come around'!. It does not mean that they like the objects of their fears but they can usually look at them without having a nervous breakdown!.

I advise that you see your doctor to find a reputable person who can offer treatment!. You won't be asked to eat pickles, if that is your extreme but you can soon be 'made' to be in the same room as them - just the same as for people who hate snakes, mice or spiders!.

In the meantime, you do not have to be embarrassed!. If you are going to a party with friends, advise them in advance of your problem!. I do this because I am allergic to chicken and people often like to prepare chicken dishes for guests!. I am not 'chicken' when it comes to chickens but it is in the same 'ball park', as your experience!.

Can you withstand, say, going into a supermarket aisle where jars of pickles are on display!? This may be a 'starting point', as no smell or ' exposed pickles' are involved!. Try picking up jars, looking at them and then putting them back!.

At home, maybe try looking at one solitary pickle on a plate, such as an onion - without a stick, etc!. Gradually, you can be 'weaned off' the terror, although you may not ever like pickles!. Why not try looking at items which are not pickled, such as raw onions, peppers, gherkins, beetroot!? These are fine served fresh without pickling vinegar, etc!. They don't have to be on a stick! Can you eat 'mashed up' pickles such as from 'Branston' pickle jars because there is no identifiable single pickle in the mix!? If so, this may show an irrational response to pickles in general - and this can be treated successfully!. Can you eat meals with chilli peppers or other spices which are not actually pickled!? If so, again, an irrational fear can be overcome!.

How do you see your aversion!? Is it based on appearance of pickles!. e!.g!. on sticks - or on smell of pickling agents or taste!?

I have also played a game for those 'superior people' who might laugh at an odd phobia - the defintion being that they are all odd! Contestants have to write down their 'worst fear' and when their turn comes, they have to justify why their fear is the worst ever in the world!. Even better if you have some props such a splastic models from toy shops, or photographs!.

I bet you all the pickles in the world that they will stop laughing at your phobia when their phobias are revealed! Agoraphobia, Vertigo, fear of flying, fear of dirt - you name it! They all came up but what about this one!? Fear of carpets! No problem if you have a parquet floor for your guests!

So you see, you are quite normal and readily 'curable'!. I hope that this amateur reassurance helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Thats really Odd, I wonder if theres a name for that!.!.!.

anywho! you could always confront your fear slowly, maybe start buy getting some one to buy some for you, keep them on your frigde or somewhere you will see them till you get used to themWww@Answer-Health@Com

You're going to have a long difficult life if you don't get to grips with the problem, that's for sure!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

But not so 'embarrised' to stop you posting on Yahoo Answers!. *rolls eyes*Www@Answer-Health@Com

Do you know, I'm in my sixties and I have never had a pickle jump off a plate and attack me yet!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Ha ha! how strange!Www@Answer-Health@Com
