Have you or anyone close to you had their thyroid removed?!

Question: Have you or anyone close to you had their thyroid removed!?
I have to go at the end of this month to have my thryroid removed and I am so scared!! I feel like this is a pretty major surgery, I have a goider (sp) and it has cysts all over it, so it has to be removed before it grows any larger and cause me to have a hard time breathing and swallowing!. I am a young mother (23) with a young husband (23) and two amazing little boys (1 and 3)!. I'm not sure how serious of a surgery it is, I know they have to cut my throat open, from side to side, there is a risk that I could bleed out, they could damage my vocal cords, I have to come home with drain tube hanging out of my neck and I have to have someone stay with me for 2 weeks because I'm not going to be able to care for my children, animals and house and my husband works 50 + hours a week to enable me to stay at home with my children!. I guess what I'm really wanting to know is does anyone know any statisics or facts of any sort on this surgery and how much I should worry!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had a total thyroidectomy!. First off!.!.!.don't worry!! :-)

I got to the hospital at 9am!. In the operating room at 10am!. I had full anesthesia (completely knocked out)!. Surgery took about 1!.5 hours!. I was supposed to spend only 1 night in the hospital but my parathyroid glands went into shock!. They weren't removed!.!.!.just!.!.!.shocked!. Parathyroids control calcium in your blood!. So I spent 2 nights in the hospital!. The doctor actually left a small amount of my thyroid gland still attached to my vocal cords!.!.!.that's to make sure I didn't lose my voice!.

I had to continue taking calcium pills and vitamin D pills for 1 month after surgery!. I never ever had to take a single pain pill!. When they remove your thyroid, they cut the nerves in your neck!. So you're totally numb!! It took almost 1 year for my nerves to grow back and for me to regain feeling in my neck area!. Also, the surgeon made the incision in the natural line/fold at the bottom of my neck!. Within a year of the surgery, the line pretty much faded away!. The incision is only about 2-3 inches wide!.

I felt pain more in my shoulders after the surgery because I was walking around hunched over!. It's psychological!.!.!.you think your neck was totally cut and hunching over makes you think you're keeping your head on your shoulders!. My parents kept reminding me not to hunch over!.

I resumed all of my normal activities within 1 week of the surgery (walking on treadmill, going to the grocery store, bank, etc!.)!. You'll need to take thyroid meds everyday for the rest of your life!.

Good luck!.

My best friend got hers removed!.

She was scared to death before surgery!. But I assured her everything was going to be okay!.

She went in the morning, they gave her some medicine to make her drowsy and go to sleep and within the next hour or two, it was done!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
