A question for the 'medics' among us?!

Question: A question for the 'medics' among us!?
If you were hospitalised - nothing too serious - would you be a cooperative patient!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
I am a nursing student, and 6 days ago I literally crushed the tips of two of my toes!.!.!. not fun!. Anyways, it landed me in the ER and I felt that I was a really good patient!. I think the PA who took care of me enjoyed me because she was able to explain things as she would from one professional to another!. I even watched her inject lidocaine into my nerves, which she said most people can't do!.
On the contrary, when my parents or other family members are hospitalized, I tend to be a little bit irritating to the staff!.!.!. but only if the staff isn't doing their job!. If I see a nurse come into a room and not wash her hands, I wil instruct her to do so!. I'm not being mean, but I am fully aware of standard precautions, and if a nurse or doctor is not adhering to the expected standards, then I will call them out!. I only wish I had this information years ago!. My mom had a mastectomy 10 years ago, and the doctor FORCED her to look at her wound one day post op even though she said she wasn't ready!. If I knew then what I know now, I would have told him to go back to bedside manner 101 and told him to get the F*** out of the room!. Then I would have filed a complaint with the hospital!. There are certain guidelines that all health professionals are expected to follow!. Also, if I thought a nurse did a really great job, I would tell her so!.
I find that in my practice, the hardest people to deal with are the sons, parents or family members of doctors, nurses and lawyers!. I have actually had people take detailed notes about the care their family was receiving!.!.!. talk about nerve racking!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I was a good patient when I was in hospital!. I understand that it's not always easy for people to be a 'good patient' thought when they are suffering!. Medics understand this and take this on board!. That's part of the challenge!. However, there are times when they have to put up with unacceptable treatment!. In these cases they should then withdraw their offer of 'treatment' in my opinion (unless the patient is not aware or cannot help / control themselves)!. I can't stand how many drunks hurt themselves and then go to ER (where real sick people are) and demand attention!. I would turn them out of my hospital if it were up to me!. (p!.s!. I'm not a medic thank goodness)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, you know they are just trying to do their jobs!. It's always aggrivating having someone come in without any formal training and telling you (especially if you're experienced) that they know better!.

HOWEVER, I see nothing wrong with asking them questions to show that they do infact know what they're doing or why!. That's just being informed! The good ones will be able to answer your questions, the bad ones will get angry because they realize they've been made!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No, I'm not!. I realize that they are just doing a job, but that I'm paying them to do that job!. So I cooperate with reasonable requests that relate to my treatment, and rebel completely against institutional "red tape" and dehumanizing treatment including gowns when not necessary, paperwork which is duplicate, and rude or arrogant personnel including doctors!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm a perfect patient, don't ever complain, know what to expect, and keep quiet for the most part!.!.lol!. Unless of course and this happens way more then it should the person going to do something on me!.!.draw blood or whatever doesn't put gloves on!.

It's a whole other story when it comes to my kids though!. You may not know I know what you are and aren't supposed to do but I will sure speak up before you do it wrong!.!. I'm sure that gets annoyingWww@Answer-Health@Com

Sure, I was good enough that they sent students to care for me!. Most health care workers a good pts!. I was recently assigned to take care of one of my supervisors kids and she was awesome!.

However, their are some who can be real stinkers! Mainly, PhDs and their family's, they tend to be very demanding!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yer, happened to me back in august, was quite funny when the SpR started 'given it the big 'un' coz I'm a medical student, acting all pompous like, but I just ignored her!. LOL, made her maadd! I was a good patient though, I know the shite the nurses have to put up withWww@Answer-Health@Com

I'm a nurse, so i'll confess to being the worst patient!. I hate being ill!. I had to go in a short while ago for a bleeding ulcer, and if my colleagues could have bashed me over the head with a bedpan, they would have done!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

working in the medical field, i have daily contact with patients prior to and after their arrival into hospital, knowing what nurses have to put up with i would feel obliged to be a good patientWww@Answer-Health@Com

i was hospitalized lately also and i was told i was a terrible patient!. they didn't fully alleviate my pain and i howled until they did!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Former EMT here!. NO, we know too much!. My biggest one, "That doesn't hurt", yeah, we know better!. We can also decipher the medical jargon, so I find that we aren't very good patients at all!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Why be anything other than cooperative, I really can`t see the point of your question!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

In hospital you have to behave and act like a patientWww@Answer-Health@Com

Well thank you for not going to my hospital!.I get enough uncooperative patients everydayWww@Answer-Health@Com

well I assume I would be, what would make me want not to be!.!.!.!.!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have been in and out of hospital most of my life and find it better to cooperate with the people who know best!. Being awkward just makes the recovery process longer and harder for the patient and the job harder for the nursing staff!. So anyone who cannot or will not cooperate is really doing themselves a disservice!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
