Glad to see a folk at similar age me (52) and also was a long time smoker (over 30 years) trying to quit it!.

Let me share you my own and some others' smoking (nicotine) withdrawal symptoms experiences (one time last year but failed and one more time since 4/15, in which I quit it cold turkey,

-Palpitations (worst of all the symptoms for me)
-Anxiety
-Short of Breath/breathlessness
-Some diarrhea
-Insomnia
-Depressed
-Feeling lonesome
-Chest tightness
-Sore/dry throat

I am quitting since 4/15, some of the symptoms are diminishing or getting weaker!. However, some palpitations, anxiety and chest discomfort, etc are still lingering around my body!. Some ex-smokers said it take times to get over these, I believe them! Hope you get well soon and never take a puff again! Good Luck to both of us!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

No, do not use more patches than recommended by the manufacturer!. Doing so could be extremely hazardous to your health!.

I smoked for ten years!. Then quit!. The first few days were the hardest!. I kept thinking and feeling that I was going through withdrawals, that my body craved a cigarette!. But once I realized that the feeling that I just had to have a cigarette was not due to withdrawals or craving, but rather due to habit, it was a breeze from there on!. A habit can easily be changed!. I never touched another cigarette!.

It's normal for your body to be on edge, sweating!. After about a week or so, you will begin coughing up gunk from your lungs!. This is your body's way of cleansing itself!. About the same time you will go through a couple days where you forget things, such as you may be talking, then suddenly can't remember what you were talking about!. This is also very normal and only lasts a couple days!.

Good luck!. You can do it!. Just remember -- it's not cravings you feel, it's habit!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

First of all, I commend you for quitting!. That takes courage and strength!.

You have taken a positive step towards living a longer and healthier life, and that's always good!.

You may want to speak with a doctor about how many patches you can use and to get some advice about dealing with what you are going through physically after quitting smoking!.

Also, you may want to seek out some support groups or programs for people who are trying to or have quit smoking!.

Keep in mind that it is not going to be easy!. Try to replace your habit of smoking with positive things like exercising, hobbies, etc!.

I have a co-worker who quit smoking years ago, and now he is totally into fitness and health!. He exercises, eats a health diet, and he is a changed man!. His initial goal was just to quit smoking, but he took it further and decided to live a healthy life style all together!.

I watched another co-worker slowly die from continued smoking!. She was told that if she did not quit smoking she would not see her daughter graduate from high school!. She did not quit!. She never got to see her daughter graduate and later get married!.

You don't have to go through this alone!. Seek help!.
The American Cancer society or other such organizations may be able to direct you to some programs or information that can help you stay off cigarettes!.

Stay strong!.
I bid you peace!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

When a question already has good answers provided, I don't normally give another answer, but I think I can add to what is already here!.
First off, 5 Days ( and counting! ) Congratulations! Way to go!.
Second, do NOT increase the patches you have on unless you've talked to your doctor first!. You could give yourself nicotine overdose!. It's not good for the heart!.
Your body may respond in many ways, but everything you mentioned here is normal!. The "up tight & nervous" feelings are your body screaming for nicotine!. That will ease up after a few days!. A "nicotine fit" lasts for a few minutes!. You can time it!. Find something to do for those few minutes to keep your mind off a cig!. I used to take a shower sometimes when the craving got so bad!. I also spent a lot of time at my local library!. Places where I couldn't smoke and didn't smell of smoke!.
That cough is your lungs cleaning themselves out!. I used that Mucinex to help clear out all that stuff!. It helped me get that crap out of my lungs!.
Talk to your doctor!. He will be able to give you some real good "inside info" that will help you out!.
Remember that this is one of the hardest things you will ever do in your life!. It's a fight, I'm not going to lie to you!. It CAN be done!. You can win this fight!. You're young yet and have a lot of living to do!. Do it all in good health!.
Best of luck to you!. God bless!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
