There is no disease called Monkey Gunya and even the World Health Organisation has not registered it,"It is just a medical rumour and at best the disease is nothing but Chikungunya which some doctors might have mistaken and given the new name,"However, there is a "Monkey fever" or Kyasanur forest fever transmitted by as two species of monkeys which are known to harbour the virus!. Monkey fever was prevalent in late 1960s and early 1970s!. This fever also has similar symptoms of chikungunya like muscle pain and nausea!. Prof!. "SHIMOGA: With the onset of summer, the dreaded KFD (Kyasanoor Forest Disease), better known as monkey fever, is back again in Malnad region!.

Ticks from the carcasses of monkeys act as carriers of the virus!. The symptoms of the disease are continuous fever, fatigue and severe pain in joints and it may prove fatal if not treated!.

The disease, which was first noticed in Agumbe and Megaravalli parts in Tirthahalli taluk, is spreading gradually to other parts in the taluk such as Malur, Mahishi, Kudimallige and Dabbanagadde!.

According to the District Health and Family Welfare Officer Eshwar Naik, the primary health centres are administering anti-viral vaccines after the disease is confirmed following examination of blood samples!.

Precautions


He said that 1,500 people at Kudimallige have been administered vaccines so far during the season!. Similarly, people residing within a three-km radius of Megaravalli are vaccinated as the precautionary measure!. He said the primary health centre at Megaravalli will be open 24 hours to attend to any emergency call!. Besides, he said gram panchayats in the taluk are engaged in preventive measures!.

Chikun gunya too


Meanwhile, chikun gunya - a water-borne viral disease has surfaced in Huligere, Durgammana Road, Jainara Road of Haranahalli in Shimoga taluk!. It has affected 34 people so far and they are suffering from severe fever and joint pain!. "Www@Answer-Health@Com
