Yeah-antibiotics can mess with your tummy!. Try OTC heartburn tablets!. Also, while you're on the drugs: don't eat heavy meals, and avoid spicy foods, alcohol, smoking, anything peppermint flavored, acidic fruits like citrus, and caffinated drinks!. These can all make heartburn worse!. If you're on the drugs long term, ask the doc if you can take an Rx heartburn med, as well!.

Next time you need antibiotics, tell your doc that the Doxycycline was not kind to your stomach and is there something else that will work!?

I've found that the following foods make my stomach feel better: ginger (gingerale, ginger tea, candied ginger!.!.!.)yogurt (beware the strawberries-very acidic!), barley, cucumbers, and oddly enough, garlic!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Try taking it with something to eat but if your symptoms are as bad as you say they are then I would call your doctor!. This medication can give you stomach or esophagus ulcers or Inflammation of the Esophagus which will lead to ulcers!. Like I said, eat then take your medicine and if that doesn't help, call your doctor and tell him your symptoms, he might lower the dose or change it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Why are you only taking this antibiotic at bedtime!? That's not the way such medications are to be used!. Speak to your pharmacist; you may need his/her support in asking your doctor whether a change in medication is advisable!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

*lol* I presume if you are smart enough to spell the drug right you are smart enough to follow instructions!

Really you should go to a pharmacy and ask them to look it up in their blue book!.

Anyway after skimming a bunch of stuff I'd say drink a full glass of milk with it (unless you don't consume dairy) or a full glass of water!. An extra glass of water wouldn't hurt!. Also papaya is said to help reduce acid production so you could try that (you can get tablets of it or just eat fresh/dried papaya)!.

I would also confirm with a pharmacist if you should remain upright for 30 minutes after taking it rather than taking it right before bed!.

Medications can trigger symptoms of GERD!.

A number of drugs can cause the LES to relax or function improperly or can irritate the esophagus, causing GERD symptoms!. Examples of these drugs include:

Antibiotics, such as doxycycline and tetracycline

Take doxycycline with a full glass of water or other liquid to avoid irritating your throat or stomach!. Doxycycline can be taken with or without food!. However, if the medicine does upset your stomach, you may wish to take it with a glass of milk or after you have eaten!.

Doxycycline tablets should be swallowed whole!. If you have difficulty swallowing pills, you can take this medication by opening the capsule and sprinkling the entire contents onto a spoonful of cool, soft applesauce!. Be careful not to spill any of the contents!. If you do, you will not be able to use this dose and will have to start over with a new mixture!. Swallow the mixture immediately, without chewing, followed by a cool 8-ounce glass of water!. Discard the mixture if you are not able to use it immediately; do not store it to use later!.

Side effects may include:
Angioedema (chest pain; swelling of face, around lips, tongue and throat, arms and legs; difficulty swallowing), bulging foreheads in infants, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, discolored teeth in infants and children (more common during long-term use of tetracycline), inflammation of the tongue, loss of appetite, nausea, rash, rectal or genital itching, severe allergic reaction (hives, itching, and swelling), skin sensitivity to light, vomiting

I have been on Doxy now for about 6 weeks for a couple chronic infections!. I have noticed it does make me sick to my stomach when I take it on an empty stomach!. Well, about three days ago I started to feel like maybe I was having heartburn but it was a different feeling!. I felt like I had food stuck in my esophagus and it hurt right at the end about where the breast bone ends and up in my throat!. I felt like it was spasming and the pain would refer to my jaw!. I have never had heartburn much and certainly nothing like this!. I hurt all day long and the pain was worse when I ate or drank!. Of course I was freaking out until I saw on this site that Doxy can cause damage and apparently a lot of pain!. I think it was my fault though because I didn't always take it with a full glass of water and I often took it right before I went to bed and sometimes while I was still in bed!. No one told me not to lay down after taking it or anything!. The only info i got was a little explanation that it can cause an upset stomach, nausea, and vomiting so take it with some food if that occurs!. Well, i would definitely recommend taking it with some food an apple or something and not before you go to bed, and drink a lot of water with it!!!
I have a Dr!. apt next week but I am going to try not taking it for a few days to see if the pain lessens!.

Some medications that can interact with doxycycline are antacids and supplements that contain calcium, iron, magnesium, or sodium bicarbonate!. If you take products containing these minerals within 2 hours of the time you take doxycycline hyclate, these medicines could decrease the doxycycline
