Alcohol and Type 1 Diabetes?!

Question: Alcohol and Type 1 Diabetes!?
please spare me all of the underage drinking lectures and risks and drunk driving stuff, and just help me out with this!.

I have had type 1 since i was 4 and i keep really good control of my BG (rarely go below 80, never above 150, always about 95-100)

i watch what i eat (complete vegan diet, very balanced in vitamins and nutrients)

highest A1C=7!.2
lowest=5!.1
average=6!.2

i use the Animus 20/20 insulin pump with Humalog

so as you can see i care alot about my health and i do the best that i can to live with diabetes!. I wanna know what the "safe" limits for drinking is!. I know the basic risks as in BG lows, impairment to correct low BG and that stuff, but at what point does it get really dangerous!.

Like what if i pass out, or throw up!? i have never gotten to the point where either of those have happened, but have gotten to where i stumble and slurred speach and ya know, just pretty drunk!. Where do i become really concerned!?

I am 6'0", 178lbs, really muscular!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am also type 1, though I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my twenties!. And I remember now that the last couple times I went on idiotic drinking binges before I was diagnosed, it hit me really hard and I passed out completely both times!.

I also use the Animus 20/20 pump!.

Here is what I will tell you about my experiences drinking responsibly as a type 1 diabetic!. And I know you don't want to hear it, but there is no reason at 16 you need to be drinking!. It is not going to make your teenage years better, and that is from someone who learned it the hard way!.

I have found that I can enjoy a few drinks if I plan things correctly!. First: Never drink alone!. That should go for anyone, but it's especially true if you are a diabetic!. Second: Never drink on an empty stomach!. You should always drink either during or right after eating!. There is a chance alcohol can affect the rate at which your liver releases glucose!. That can cause your blood sugar to drop dangerously low!. Third: When you can feel it, stop!. That should apply for everyone, but it's extra important for us again!.

I have found that these selections require no bolus for me!. One light beer or one glass of red wine!. If I go beyond that, I may bolus!. If I do a straight shot of whiskey or tequilla, I also do not bolus!. A darker beer is going to have probably 15 to 30 grams of carbohydrate, and I do bolus for it!. You also need to count for sugars in drink mixes like margarita mix!.

Again, you should not be drinking at this point in your life, and you should always stop when you start to feel something!. As a 16 year old type 1 diabetic, you hopefully have learned by now to be your own caretaker!. When you put yourself in a state that you cannot tend to your own needs, then you reinforce a very ugly stereotype that follows us around!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

if you really cared tons about your health (and it seems like you do), then you wouldnt drink at all, no matter what your age!.

if you are super concerned about this dramatically affecting your health, i wouldnt take any chances!.

sorry, i dont know much about Diabetes!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Since you're diabetic, drinking should be no where in your diet, at all, ever!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You won't know if it i too much until you croak it, and then it is too late to worry!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My twin brother is a Type 1 diabetic and my best friend is also Type 1 Diabetic!. My best friend has been drinking heavily since she started college at U of Miami!. Nothing has gone wrong because she controls her drinking (if that is even possible to do with how much she drinks)!. I am not saying go ahead and get drunk or that is good to drink as a diabetic; I personally believe if you are a diabetic you should not be drinking AT ALL!. She usually has 4-5 drinks per night and is not on a pump!. She has passed out before from drinking and/or has thrown up and she has been fine because she took care of what she had to do with her insulin etc!. However, she also had sober friends with her to help in case of anything!. Make sure your friends know what to do in case of an emergency and that you WEAR YOUR BRACELET AT ALL TIMES! Also, watch how many sugary drinks you have along with the alcohol and count every time you have one!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

just to let you know what my son who was just diagnosed with Type 1 went through on a night he decided to go against Mom's advice and try drinking

He started drinking around 9pm and somewhere around 11:30 - midnight he passed out completely
I got him awake only to have him pass out again!. I tested his sugar and it was almost 500
He had not told me he was going to drink!. His brother knew but was leaving to go to the corner convienent store!. I knew something was up and found him at the edge of his bed gagging he was throwing up while passed out!.
Had I not known something was amuss he would have died that night
It took three of us to get him down stairs and to walk him around before he finally came around good enough I felt it was safe for him to sleep!.

So besides the fact that you are on insulin and thinking of drinking and im not going to lecture you on how serious that alone is

Please one mom to another mom's child:
Please please please tell a responsible person who will stay with you that you are diabetic and drinking!.

I hope you understand more then my son that sometimes mom does know what she is talking about!.
Now if you decide to drink anyways, make sure you have your insulin in case your sugar sky rockets, make sure someone can have a level head to call the paramedics in case you need them, make sure you eat before drinking and try to go for the stuff that has 0 carbs in it

I understand that everyone wants to know what it is like drinking just please be prepared and have others prepared with you and again TELL someone you are drinking and a diabetic!.

This hit my son very fast and he is 5'11" 170 pounds

i use to do that!. they didn't have the pump when i was 16!. watch what you drink!. have soberer friend around!. only limit your self to one or two drinks!. make sure you eat!. one of the times when i drank my BG was 350 an hr after i had 3 drinks, then it dropped to 120 a few hours later!. i didn't do my insulin so be careful!. if you have a high wait a little and test again!. if you do your insulin it might make it too low!. one of my friends (another type 1) did her insulin and ended up in the hospital with a BG of 18!. so watch out!. be responsible!. don't really drink like everyone else!. your too young!. then again i cant criticize you for something i use to do!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
