HIV, which causes AIDS, is believed to descend from a version of the virus which only infects monkeys!. HIV emerged via evolution of the virus, and became able to infect humans!. However, how exactly the virus jumped species to affect humans is still largely a matter of mystery!.
I personally believe that the virus originated via contaminated vaccines!. During the 1970's and 1960's there was a cluster of hepatitis B vaccines which were manufactured from products harvested from a group of chimpanzee's that were delivered to individuals in Central Africa, and to gay men in New York City!. These chimps were infected with a myriad of viruses!. It is quite possible that these, or other tainted viruses, started the epidemic!.
Other theories include the "cut hunter theory" which states that a hunter had some sort of open wound, and was infected while butchering a monkey out in the field!. While other vaccines have been transported to humans this way, it is unlikely that this was the cause of AIDS--as there where two genetically similar outbreaks in two completely different parts of the world!.
