Answers:
You SHOULD take the Diltiazam (a Calcium Channel Blocker that is used for fast heart rates and blood pressure)!. No question about that!.

The reason for the suggestion NOT to mix the two together is that Diltiazam inhibits (moderately) the metabolism of Xanax (Alprazolam) by channeling through the CYP3A4 pathway of the liver where certain medications are often subject to such increases or decreases in metabolism!.

Diltiazem is a safe and effective medication for rapid heart rates, and I use it quite frequently for patients who may only have a fast heart rate, but do NOT have blood pressure problems!. Likewise, your doctor may have given you the xanax to decrease some of the side-effects of having a fast heart rate (possible anxiety, nervousness, jitters, etc!., etc!.)!.

You may just want to start with the Diltiazem FIRST for a few days!. If you still feel any side effects of having a fast heart rate, then you can safely take some Xanax a few hours later -- probably starting with just 1/2 a tablet!.

Not to worry!. These are safe and effective medications!. Unfortunately, the pharmacies don't always predict exactly WHY a medication is being used, so they often provide rather unnecessary over-kill on information to patients!. Some of this information may be so overblown that the patient may get freaked out and NOT use the medication at all!. Believe me, I see this on a regular basis!.

If you truly have any further questions about this, please talk to your doctor!. He/she should be helpful in explaining why they are being used, and their safety!.

Best of luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

they are both downers, you would probably fall asleep!. and it probably could cause an unsafe drop in blood pressureWww@Answer-Health@Com
