What to do when someone has an asthama attack?!

Question: What to do when someone has an asthama attack!?
my little brother who is 14 has asthma!. he says this restricts him from playing sports because he can have an attack and not be able to breathe!. i know this was a major problem for him when he was little and he always had his inhaler and stuff but for the past couple of years that he lived with me i never saw him with an inhaler nor did he have an attack (from what i know)!. so is it possible that his asthma isn't that bad anymore and that he can play sports now!? because i feel like he doesn't push himself to play sports and now that he is in middle school (where people start to care about your sports skills) i feel like he is using it as an excuse and by now he's just telling himself he can't play sports as good as others!.
i want to take him to play hockey with me and see if he can actually do it because i want him to have confidence in himself and not just shy away from sports!. what do i need to know before i take him to play sports!? what do i do if he has an attack!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I also have exercise induced asthma!. I didn't push myself to play sports in high school, like your brother!. It's not because I was lazy!. It was because if I ran I literally could not breathe!. If I had a brother like you, pushing me hard to play sports just because other students care about athletics, I would truly resent you!.

You have to understand that people with asthma can be athletic, but they have to go at their own pace!. Anything with a lot of high intensity running or other activity can trigger an attack in someone with exercise induced asthma!. Hockey may not be a great choice, because there is a lot of skating fast, as well as cold air which makes asthma worse!.

With asthma, lower intensity, individual sports are the best, such as hiking, rock climbing, or swimming!. It's important to take breaks as often as needed, and of course to use an inhaler!. Your brother probably doesn't have an inhaler because it is embarrasing to him, so make sure that if you do athletics with him you let him know that you and everyone else don't care that he has it, and in fact encourage him to use it!. If you want him to play team sports with you, keep in mind that he will probably feel like he is dragging his team down!.

If he has an attack while exercising, the best thing to do is to stop and catch his breath!. In high school I tried running through an asthma attack once and I almost blacked out!. Let him take breaks, but don't patronize him either!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i have asthma and i have to be careful as well when i exercise as this will induce an asthma attack!. his asthma could be triggered by exercise, aside from allergans also, and that might be why he is hesitant to participate in sports!. if you do convince him to play hockey, make sure you bring his inhaler in case he does have an asthma attack or feels one coming on as that will be the easiest and quickest way to offer relief!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i also had asthma (also when i was little) and i'm 15 now!. i play sports (basketball) and i haven't had an attack since i was 10!? but sometimes i can feel the effects of asthma (hard breathing, quickly tired) but i don't let that stop me, so just try to persuade him to play somehow!. if he has an attack, go to a nearby clinic, hospital, a friend who's a doctor, or just somewhere he can get better!. got it!? then go talk to him!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

People can grow out or there symptoms lessen as they get older!. This might be your brothers case!. I would not want to risk having him play sports!. What I would do, would be to take him to the doctors and get him tested again!. Getting physical activity is very important especially being a teen age!. Good luck with your brother!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had allergic asthma when I was little and then again when I was in my 20s!. This form of asthma is not as severe as what your little brother had, so I was always able to participate in sports except, of course when I had allergies!.
If your brothers asthma was a result of allergies then it is possible that he got better with the years!. I was often in the ER with my allergies when I was a little kid and they got gradually better after puberty ( with a dip in my mid twenties, when I tried to share an apartment with a cat!.!.!.)and now with 32 I don't react to most of the things I was allergic to!. But this cannot necessarly be applied to your brother, a doctor needs to examine him!.

When someone has really an acute asthma attack he either needs his inhaler or an ER where they give him a shot and give him oxygene if necessary!.
I have read that excersize can be actually good for asthma patients as it builds up lung capacity!. But I don't know which and if this applies to your brother!.
So, in conclusion I would strongly recommend to have your brother examined by a doctor, he then can also tell which activities would be suitable!.
Finally, although some form of excersize is necessary for people, not all people are into team sports and competition!. Maybe your brother prefers other things instead and I think there is no use in pushing him to do team sports if he is not really interested!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
