Answers:
well a tear in the aorta is called an aortic dissection in medical terms!.

The aorta is the biggest artery in the body that comes directly out of the heart to supply the body with blood!. The aorta is made up of a number of diffferent layers!. like a series of tubes all inside one another!.

An aortic dissection is where one or more of these layers tears and blood can flow down between the layers!. If all three tear, blood will pour into the chest cavity and the patient will die of internal bleeding!.

This is a serious life threatening condition but it can be either acute or chronic, and the tear could have occured up to 2 weeks before the patient appears with severe chest pain!.

As your boyfriend survived for 3 weeks in the hospital it is likely he did not tear all three layers of his aorta initially as this is the primary cause of sudden death, but maybe he only had 1 or 2 layers torn, but later the artery wall got weaker and weaker and finally gave way!.

The reason that brain damage and paralysis that occurs is that if the common carotid arteries are involved ( they branch from the aorta), these are the main arteries that supply the brain causing a lack of blood and oxygen to the brain, resulting in a stroke!.

I hope this is helpful and explains a few things

sorry for your loss, it must have been a shock!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
