Before you start to read, I apologise for the length of this reply!.

Dependant on the time that you had the vials of blood extracted from your arm determines what sort of blood test the doctor is doing!.

If you had the blood taken first thing in the morning !.!.!. after the doctor's office/surgery was opened, of course, without eating from the previous night would indicate that the doctor is doing a fasting plasma glucose test (also called a fasting blood glucose test)!. This test would determine whether your body's cells were utilising any insulin that your pancreas may still be producing!.

If the blood was taken at a later point in the day, and you hadn't been asked to starve yourself, or rather refrain from eating, from the previous night, your doctor might be taking a gycolated hemoglobin test (also known as HbA1c test)!. This test would determine what your blood sugar levels have been over the previous 3 months!.

Other tests might include what's called a c-peptide test!. This test is not often carried out due to the expense of it, but it determines whether or not your pancreas is still producing insulin!. (Your pancreas produces c-peptide in equal amounts to the insulin that it produces!.) If you are still producing insulin but your fasting plasma glucose level is raised, it COULD indicate that you have either type 2 diabetes or you are pre-diabetic!.

If your pancreas is not producing insulin, you will be diagnosed as type 1 diabetic!.

The difference between type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes is that in type 1 you are insulin dependent, which means that you will have to inject insulin daily simply to stay alive!. In type 2 diabetes, your body's cells are resistant to the effects of insulin that you are still producing!. Your body needs insulin to function otherwise you soon become very ill!.

Type 2 diabetics normally start their treatment by the utilisation [utilization] of tablets!. There are different types of tablets!. Some actually stimulate your pancreas to produce more insulin, whereas others make your body's cells better able to utilise insulin !.!.!. it sort of holds the key to cells in order for the cells to take in glucose (sugar) from your bloodstream in order to create energy!.

Pre-diabetes is basically the forerunner to developing full blown diabetes!. If you learn to eat fewer carbohydrates and exercise more this may well prevent full blown diabetes from developing!.

In all types of diabetes, it's important that food intake is monitored (it's usually the carbohydrate content of foods that's counted, though some overweight diabetics are taught to count calories)!. Exercise is a valuable tool in combating diabetes!. First of all, it makes your body's cells better able to utilise glucose from the bloodstream by making them more sensitive to the effects of insulin (it 'opens the doors' to the cells), plus your muscles turn more of the glucose into energy!.

I believe the DM that you mention in your question refers to diabetes mellitus (raised blood sugar levels)!. It's important to know this as there's another type of diabetes, called diabetes insipidus, which is a totally different condition!.

You don't mention what tests were carried out when you were pregnant, but if you're talking about blood tests, they were most likely spot checks on what your blood sugar level was at the time it was taken, or HbA1c, the same test mentioned earlier that gives an average of your blood sugar level for the previous three months!.

If you were asked to drink a very sweet drink (it's called glucola) full of glucose and then had your blood drawn at various intervals later that day, you were probably having a GTT (glucose tolerance test)!. This would have told the medical staff whether you were able to deal with glucose from your bloodstream by yourself, or whether you are resistant to the effects of insulin being produced!.

If it was determined that your body did not deal adequately with glucose during your pregnancy, you would have been diagnosed as suffering gestational diabetes!. Sadly, if this was the case, you are more at risk of developing diabetes at some stage of your life!.

Hopefully, I've given the information that I think you wanted to know about!. If, however, I'm wide of the mark, do feel free to click on my avatar/photograph and send me an email and I'll do my best to straighten things out for you!.

Blessings to you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

They will still be able to tell if you are diabetic or not!. They do not always the glucose test!. I have been to a lot of doctors, and none of them ever did it!.!.!.!.!.just blood tests!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

They can diagnose DM by a glucose tolerance test where sugar is given!. Diagnostic criteria can also be applied to Fasting blood sugars(2 times) and even random blood sugars(2 times)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
