Answers:
She doewn't need to go to a specialist!. Look up Geriatircs Clinics in the yellow pages!. Many hospitals will have them!. These are Internists and FP's with an interest in the elderly!. So they are not "Specialists", but they do specialize in issues that affect the elderly!. Multi-infarct demential is different from Alzheimer's!. And there are treatment programs for these patients!. The most effective are enrichment programs which stimulate the brain and keep it active!. Many community centers are now providing them!. That has been shown to slow the progression!. The most rapid way for ANY dementia to progress is to remain isolated and in an unstimulating environment!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If she is having small strokes in her brain, a neurologist would be able to help her far better than a primary care doctor!. Most, if not all, hospitals have some type of program for patients who don't have insurance - it's usually called "self-pay" or "patient assistance"!. These programs are income-sensitive, and they do require that the patient submit documentation - paystubs and a copy of something that proves current residency (to be sure that you live where you say you live - something like a utility bill or a driver's license will usually do)!. Depending on the program, and the patient's level of income, your husband's grandmother could get discounted - or potentially free - healthcare!.

Has she applied for Medicare or Medicaid!?

Finally, given that she has been given a diagnosis of strokes, you may want to contact the National Stroke Association at www!.stroke!.org - perhaps they can give you some tips as well on how to handle this!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Small strokes or transient ischemic attacks should always be carefully evaluated!. If the situation is worsening, it may be worthwhile to get checked again in case a full-blown stroke develops!. There are hospitals (county facilities) that can't turn you away for inability to pay!. Also some hospitals affiliated with religious organizations work the same way!. My point is that you should go somewhere else!. A "specialist" may not be needed here!. Unfortunately this doesn't always mean the care will be free!. The good news is that they will care for your grandmother-in-law regardless!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

try and get a list of Dr's that are covered by her insurance, Try and find one that deals with older people and the issues they have, then see if a specialist is covered if you have a referral!. Also call the United way in your area!. Most states you can dial 211 on your telephone!. I am sorry to say my grandmother also suffered from mini strokes in the brain that led to dementia so you might need to see if her insurance will cover any kinds of mental health!. A mental health physician may be of more help to her at this time
Best of luck in a very difficult situation!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

go to social services and explain this issue to them!. if her dr!. is not helping it sounds like she needs a new primary care physician!. you're right, this is important, and it's a crying shame that this country treats it's senior citizen like crap, especially when it comes to adequate health care!. I wish all of you the best in this endeavor!.

Also, since this is an election year, you might want to appeal to your state representative and explain the situation about her not getting any help!. they have to respond to you!. Again, God bless her and I wish you the best with this!. Hope this helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Probably won't pay because it is a pre exsisting condition!. TIAs (Transient Ischemic Attack) is what she is having and undoubtedly cannot be prevented!. Its actually probably setting her up for a big stroke!. You can't really change what the brain is going to do and when!. I would keep her under supervision in case she has a big stroke and then emergency treatment will be the only way to help!. Sorry!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There has to be something you can do, I'm sorry to hear about your husbands grandmother!. Have you tried contacting someone who is a little "higher in rank" than the people who said they wouldn't pay!. I would find an insurance company that doesnt require a medical exam, And that will cover her specific needs!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Have you tried getting her government healp like at a DES office!? They offer health insurance especially for people who are disabled or have serious health issues and are not able to work!. Usually this insurance is accepted by most doctors and they should cover any prescriptions and so forth!. I would try this first!. you can look online for the nearest DES office!. Also, if you are on an insurance already it doesnt matter you can still qualify!. I did and Im pregnantWww@Answer-Health@Com

there isnt much you can do!. higher a lawyer!. however, if her brain is deteriorating you can't stop it!. strokes means blood isnt getting to the brain so it is killing itself!. the only thing you can really do is put her on blood thinners or try to go in and bypass a vein or try to remove any blood clots

if she is really old or not in good health there are too many complications with surgery!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You can start by taking her to a different doctor or having the current doctor give her a referral to a specialist!. Most insurance companies will honor a referral from the primary doctor!.

Another option is to call the insurance company and ask for advice from them!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There are two kinds of strokes: bleeding and clot strokes!. It's important to know which kind she is having as the treatments are opposite!. Aspirin would help clotting strokes!. But it would make bleeding strokes even worse!.

I would strongly suggest that you get her to another doctor asap!. These are called TIA strokes and they can kill!.

Best of luck to you and her!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Contact the American Red Cross and ask for a referral to a group for neurological disorders!. Meanwhile, fight the insurance company! Threaten them with a lawsuit or to go public with their refusal to pay for something so important!. Contact DATELINE or 20/20!. Don't let insurance companies control when health is at risk!. FIGHT!Www@Answer-Health@Com

All counties in all states have a Mental Health Association!. I would call them and discuss the situation!. I think all counties also have Councils on Aging!. Check in your telephone yellow pages under 'County Government'!. Here in western NY state, the Aging Council has much help, information, advice and other helps for older people!. I wish you and everyone concerned the very best !Www@Answer-Health@Com

Contact a lawyer who handles medical cases!. I would suggest a home town lawyer not one of the many nationwide groups that will take a case and not help unless big money is to be earned!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Nothing that I know of can prevent strokes!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
