Doctors - these are the symptoms:?!

Question: Doctors - these are the symptoms:!?
High colesteral
High blood pressure
Protein in urine
high Potasium in blood

she has just had a biopsy on a kidney!. She has also been told from a scan that one of her kidneys is mis-shapen!. She is now waiting for results of the biopsy!.

She gets cramps in her legs and they feel like they are going to seize up (has had that for years)!. She is overwight, has thyroid problems, and she is often very breathless and sometimes hyperventilates!.

The internet is a dangerous thing when self diagnosing, but we are of course trying to look into possibilities of what she might have wrong with her - can you speculate on this!? are we on the right track!? could it be kidney failure !? if so which kind!?

thank you for your help!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
There are many different types of kidney disease, but most of them (when sufficiently severe) will lead to protein in the urine, rising of blood potassium, and leg cramps, so unfortunately these don't help differentiate one cause from another!.

Breathlessness can be caused by water retention (which can happen in most types of kidney diseases), but can also be caused by heart disease and/or severe high blood pressure, so again, this doesn't help us sort out what she has!.

This is why the doctors feel necessary to do a kidney biopsy -- which will help sort out what kind of kidney disease she has!.

Depending on the duration, kidney diseases can be divided into two main categories: acute (which last days to a couple of weeks) and chronic (which last months to years)!. Do you know if her kidney function was normal on blood tests in the past!? If so, how recent!?

Assuming this is not an acute problem, there are still many possibilities!. But if only one kidney is misshaped, this is NOT polycystic kidney disease (PCKD), which almost always affects both kidneys by the age of 30!.

If her two kidneys are very different in size (perhaps this is what you mean by "one of her kidneys is mis-shapen"!?), one possibility is something called "renal artery stenosis", which is commonly associated with high cholesterol and high blood pressure!.

Having said that, in North America, the most common cause of chronic kidney disease is still diabetes mellitus ("sugar diabetes") -- responsible for 40-50% of all severe kidney disease cases -- so this possibility must be checked out!.

Anyway, the biopsy will be back soon enough (preliminary results often are back in 24-48 hours, but the final report may take up to a week)!.

Finally, "kidney failure" is a term commonly misinterpreted (because people can have fairly severe kidney disease but still not needing dialysis), so doctors often don't use this term any more!. Instead, doctors talk about different stages of chronic kidney disease, with stage 5 being the most severe, where people need dialysis or a kidney transplant!.

It is hard to tell how severe her kidney disease is without knowing her bloodwork!. And without knowing the type of kidney disease she has, it is impossible to tell you whether the kidneys will recover or get worse with time, nor what kind of treatment will be needed!.

But getting a kidney biopsy is definitely the right step towards proper diagnosis and treatment, so trust your doctors and feel free to ask more questions here (especially if more information becomes available)!.

Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

It sounds like she has some form of renal insufficency!. This will cause elevated K+, high blood pressure, and proteinuria!. High K+ will cause bad cramping in the legs!. Kidney insufficency can cause excess fluid in the body!.This may build up around the heart and lungs causing shortness of breath and high blood pressure!. It could really be caused by lots of things!. The biopsy will hopefully tell why!. All they can do now is treat her for the kidney failure!. If they are not talking about dialysis it is probably acute renal insufficency!. They will check her labs every few months and put her on a low protein and K+ diet!. Even renal failure is treatable and managable!. It sucks to be on dialysis but!.!.!.!.!.!. right now it sounds like they are doing all they can!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

my dad has similar symptoms , and he has polycystic kidney disease, so that's a possibility - look it up!. you need to get out to a doctor though because no-one on here can diagnose her properly!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm sorry for her condition but I think that besides medical treatment she should have a strickt diet to help decreasing her cholesterol and BPand protiens in urine so try find a good nutrionist!.
I hope she gets better soon!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

High cholesterol is bad for the heart as it hardens the arteries, ditto with high blood pressure, high potassium just means she should cut down the salt in her diet, which will also help with the blood pressure, protein in the urine is not a very good sign, its usually to do with the kidneys and salt is a big no no, have you had any ultrasounds done, if not they are important to see if the major organs are having problems, liver, kidneys and the spleen too, mine went out of whack for some reason and ate up my red cells and could have died, so its important to get a proper diagnosis, if its the kidneys there is always dialysis, but if left alone too long, any or all could kill, so keep pestering the doctors until you get some answers, this is way to serious to just let go and ignore, hope this helps, dont want to worry you but better to know than not, goodluck and hope all goes well! :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Dyslipidemia is elevation of plasma cholesterol and/or TGs or a low HDL level that contributes to the development of atherosclerosis!. Causes may be primary (genetic) or secondary!. Diagnosis is by measuring plasma levels of total cholesterol, TGs, and individual lipoproteins!. Treatment is dietary changes, exercise, and lipid-lowering drugs!.
Acute kidney failure suspected!. Treatment may be directed at the cause!.
