A Rusty Nail in the Foot?!

Question: A Rusty Nail in the Foot!?
When a boy comes in the house crying with a board held to his foot by a rusty nail which is deeply imbeded, everyone wants to rush the kid to the clinic for a tatanus shot!.

One nurse told me this is rediculous, because you cannot immunize a person after the fact, it is too late, that the only benefit is phychological!.

Other people say there is still time to immunize the child even after the fact, and the tetanus shot should still be given!.

Answers:
Ouch! Ben there!. Done that!.

According to MedlinePlus, you should see your doctor!. Here's the statement:

"The tetanus vaccine can prevent tetanus but its protection does not last forever!. Adults should get a tetanus shot, or booster, every 10 years!. If you get a bad cut or burn, see your doctor--you may need a booster!."

This also comes from Mayo Clinic:

"When to seek medical advice
See your doctor to obtain a tetanus booster shot if you have a deep or dirty wound and you haven't had a booster shot within the past five years or aren't sure of your vaccination status!. Or see your doctor about a tetanus booster for any wound if you haven't had a booster shot within the past 10 years!."

This comes from the American College of Emergency Physicians:

"If you step on a nail or suffer a wound that is deep and dirty, and haven't had a tetanus shot in the past 10 years, you need help fast!. Seek medical attention immediately and rinse the wound with tap water!. Do not cleanse with soap or apply antiseptic to a deep wound!.

Besides a tetanus shot, your doctor may also give you an injection of something called tetanus immune globulin, which acts fast to prevent infection!. There is a small window of opportunity for the tetanus immune globulin to work, so don't delay seeking medical care!."

According to this, it is recommended by doctors that you should get your tetanus shot even if you may have already been infected!.
It could possibley be like the small pox vaccine!. If you are exposed to small pox, it is still recomended you get vaccinated because it seems to reduce the symptoms and make it easier on the person!.
not sure why though, lol!.

If the kid has had his tetanus shot within the last 7 years he will be fine!. If not he will need a tetanus shot! And the benefit is not just psychological!.
Be sure to watch the puncture site though as sometimes infection will develop from shoe/sock particles being pushed up into the foot!.
I've stepped on 11 nails during my life and twice they had to dig tennis shoe out of my foot ( ouch )
1st check with the Dr!. to see if the kid is up to date on his shot!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
