Answers:
There are two types of lymphedema, primary and secondary!. The causes of primary lymphedema are Milroy disease and Meige disease!. The causes of secondary lymphedema are surgery, radiation treatment, cancer, infection, and injury!. The symptoms of lymphedema are swelling in the arms, legs including finger and toes, feeling of heaviness or tightness in the arms and legs, restricted range of motion, aching or discomfort, recurring infections, and hardening and thickening of the skin!.
Lymphedema is not curable!. However, there are some treatment options!. Exercises, wrapping arms or legs, massages, pneumation compression, and compression garments are some of the treatments!. Ways to diagnose lymphedema are radionuclide imaging of the lymphatic system, magnetic resonance imaging, computerized tomography, and Doppler ultrasound!. Serious complications from lymphedema are infections, elephantiasis, and lymphangiosarcoma!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No one "lets" Lymphedema happen!! And it's not always caused by injury or having an IV in the arm!! I was recently diagnosed with mild lymphedema, secondary, due to breast cancer and having nodes removed and radiation!. I've never had blood pressure, needles or IV in my affected arm!.

I have to wear a compression sleeve most of the time!. I'm on a waiting list to see a physical therapist about it since I live in a very rural area!. So I haven't gotten too much into the treatment phase of it, but I know they use massage and compression!. I have to be very careful not to get any cuts, insect bites!.!.!.and if I do I have to clean it and bandage it right away so I don't get an infection called cellulitis!. Also avoiding excess sodium in the diet because of fluid retention!.

Please don't listen to anyone saying that she let it happen!. My best to your mom!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't know if your mum's lymphoedema is as a result of breast cancer surgery, but I do want to put correct some things that have been said!.

You can do several things to try to prevent it, but it can happen whatever precautions you take!.

I have lymphoedema in my arm and hand; it is a lifelong risk!. I have no idea what precipitated it; I think it may have been carrying shopping bags!. While every care should be taken to avoid injury to the affected area, many injuries are unavoidable, and many go unnoticed!. Insect bites and stings, sunburn, knocks and bangs, heavy (and not so heavy) lifting, minor burns, scratches!.!.!. all are risk factors for lymphoedema, and with the best will in the world you cannot avoid them all!.

My lymphoedema developed over two years after my breast surgery!. I have developed cellulitis twice - both times as a result of injuries I was not aware of and so did not treat immediately!.

It is most certainly not a case of 'letting' lymphoedema happen!.

I hope your mother's lymphoedema can be managed!. I have a permanently swollen arm, but it's manageable and I rarely wear my sleeve!. Very occasionally it is uncomfortable, but it isn't painful

Best wishes

Oh, and as to the spelling, - in the US - lymphedema; in the UK - lymphoedemaWww@Answer-Health@Com

This is serious, but I don't understand how she would let it happen!. Lymphedema occurs as a result of an injury or an IV solution was injected into an arm that has had the lymph nodes removed!. I had mine removed because of breast cancer!. Every time I need any type of hospitalization, my doctor puts a neon braclett on my arm that reads: Lymphedema Alert! No Blood Tests, Blood Pressure, No I!.V!. or Injections Into This Arm! I even have a card in my wallet that says the same thing!. If this is because she had nodes removed from cancer, she should have been told by her Doctor to protect herself from possible injury to the affected area!. Now they will need to get the fluid out, and reduce the swelling before there is nerve damage!. Some people don't recover from this affliction and treatment can vary from Doctor to Doctor!. Some Doctors don't even believe this can happen, because it doesn't happen to everyone, but I saw it at MD Anderson!. At least my Doctors informed me this can and does happen and provided me with the appropriate information!. Go to webMD and look it up, they will give you the exact information you seek!. The proper spelling for it is Lymphedema!. Give her all the love and attention she deserves to help her through this difficult time because she is probably in a lot of pain!.
