Alzheimers disease?!

Question: Alzheimers disease!?
My Grandad has Alzheimers, and I need to find ways of trying to help as best as I can!. On Friday he was taken in to hospital because of a urinary infection and his bladder was full; the doctor said this made him even more confused than before!. When I went to see him, he was asleep and curled up like a baby!. We gently woke him up and he was coming out with the most weirdest things, asking if we had won the lottery, and what day it was etc!. The next day he was much better, but still was saying weird things eg my Dad was asking if he had had any fruit and he replied "I dont go on fruit machines anymore"!. Can someone explain more about Alzheimers and help you can give to someone that has it!. Many thanks!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am so sorry you grandad has been diagnosed with the disease!.
I am gonna say everything that I know about this disease , ok !? I hope it will help you understand it a bit more!.

Alzheimer disease belongs to degenerative disease family affecting the cerebral cortex!. Its principle clinical manifestation is Dementia which is a progressive loss of cognitive fucntion independent of the state of attention!. Despite all the etiology, dementia is not part of normal aging process, and always represents a pathologic process!.

Alzheimer disease is the most common cause of dementia in the elderly!. The disease often associated with impairment of higher intellectual fucntion , with alterations in mood and behavior and later progressive memory loss , disorientation ,aphasia ( due to impaired cognitive function- aphasia is a disability to produce comprehensive and intelligible talk ) the disease typically progresses up to 5 to 10 years , the patient gradually becomes immobile, mute and disable!. The disease prevalence greatly increases with age and the symptoms normally wont occur before the age of 50 ( from 1% from 60 to 64 to 40% from 85 to 89 )

Genes have been associated with the disease!. Its been found that several gene loci have been identified for familial Alzheimer disease!. One of them was the gene for APP on chromosome 21, mutation of this gene has been found in patients with dementia!. Two other genetic loci ( singular locus ) are also linked to this disease are found on chromosome 14 and 1 which are thought to account for early-onset of the disease!. - These are pathologic information and its best if we leave it at that!.!.!.lol too complicated

There are clinical features of the disease : the progression of the disease is slow but relentless, with a symtomatic course often running more than 10 years!. Classic symptoms include forgetfulness , memory disturbances, language deficits ( this explains your granddad's uncomprehensive talk ), loss of math skills, motor skills!. Later stage of the disease comes with incontinence , mute and inability to walk !.Pneumonia is also one of the intercurrent disease that usually is the terminal event in the patients!.

I hope that helped a little, again I am sorry about your granddad!. I do wish the best for him and your family!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

HI, the thing with Alzeimers is there is so many different forms of the desease!. My dad had it for 10 years & died this year (April 25th)!. Funny thing is it wasn't the Alzeimers that killed him!. Alzeimers is a form of demensia & isn't very nice!. People forget who you are & can't remember things, although they do recollect things from their past but may forget other things!. You have to just accept that your grandfather will get confused So you must not question why!. You can buy a book to help you understand this, it is so sad that this is happening to him, however lots of elderly people get it & there isn't much you can do except be there for him but not to expect him to act like the old grandad you once new!. i am moved by what you say, both my grandfathers suffered from Alzheimers, and it is horrifying what happens!. My paternal grandfather had it for about 15 years, and it was quite gradual, whereas my maternal grandfather went downhill very quickly, he went from being coherent to not rememebering anything within 2 years!. Alzheimers sufferers do have good days and bad days, there were days when I saw my grandfathers and they didnt even recognise me (heart breaking, by the way) and other days we would talk as normal, asking me about girlfriends and my car etc!. if you wanna tal about this more, email me mellor3@yahoo!.comWww@Answer-Health@Com

my grandmother also has alzheimers!. i have found the best thing to do is repetition!. i tell her my name and ask her "what is your name!?" i tell her the day of the week, the year!. we work on very simple projects: folding washcloths, making jello!. we work on puzzles, i use flash cards to ask colors and shapes!. she wears a watch, so throughout the day i ask her what time it is!. i also ask her questions like: what is your address, what state do you live in!. she practices writing her name!.
the point is to try to MAINTAIN the skills she has for as long as possible, and to do so in small and simple steps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
