This is a facinating question!. It was caused because blacks in America have a higher incidence of salt-sensitive hypertension than blacks in Africa!. The hypothesis (no one knows for sure) is that during transport on the slave ships in tight, hot, humid conditions, those who were able to hold on to salt in their systems maintained their blood volume and BP!. Meaning that they didn't get dehydrated!. Those who were unable to hold on to salt, sweated excessively and became dehydrated and died!. So they didn't pass on their genes!. This is just a hypothesis, not a scientific fact!. In the end, no one knows for sure!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
I agree with BH!. but along with the "survival" mechanisms the survivors had to for that very long journey, you can not deny the diet of American slaves consisted of the parts of animals and remnants of vegetables that were less "desirable" to the slave owners!.
While the collagen that is naturally found in foods like pigs' ears, feet, chitterlings, etc were beneficial in keeping American blacks from looking old fast!. These types of food were not of the typical African diet!. So the "survival" mechanism of eat or die of starvation kicked in!. The smoking, frying or pickling of the available protein meat sources (bacon, fat back, salt pork, etc!.!.) became useful to add flavor to the veggies that were available & helped to stretch out limited portions of available protein to serve many people!. After approx 200 years of eating salted, fried meats - daily to stay alive may be the greatest precipitant in why American black people today have the highest rates of hypertension!.
Today we have a CHOICE - enjoy a diet of foods whose orgins are from anywhere without the salty, fried things and still be tasty - they weren't so fortunate then :^(Www@Answer-Health@Com

Are you kidding!? It's genetic makeup!. Blacks have a high propensity towards hypertension and stroke!. Part of it can be blamed on diet!. It's traditional to eat a lot of high fat, high salt foods in the southern American black community!. Higher levels of poverty also help keep blacks from quality medical care!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
this is a very interesting question i honestly do not believe black people have hypertension because of our slave ancestors!. black people are at risk for high blood pressure because they are more salt sensitve than other races!. also the level of nitric oxide in blacks is lower than in other races !.Www@Answer-Health@Com
