Am I at risk for breast cancer?!

Question: Am I at risk for breast cancer!?
Will my chances of having breast cancer increase, if my grandma (my father's mom) on my dad side of the family had it before and survives it!? And does it matter if it is on my mom or dad side of the family!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
You aren't necessarily at any greater risk than if nobody in your family had had it!.

Only 5-10% of breast cancer cases are due to hereditary factors; the rest are random (and thus not hereditary), and nobody knows what causes them!.

Hereditary breast cancer is caused by one of the faulty (and rare) BRCA genes; you can only inherit one of these genes if one of your parents carries it, in which case you would have a 50% chance of inheriting it - although inheriting it would not mean you would definitely get breast cancer!.

So your chances would increase if your grandmother's breast cancer was genetic, and she had passed the gene on to your father, who had passed it on to you!.

As I said, most breast cancers are random; my oncologist was able to assure me that my breast cancer was not hereditary and that no members of my largely female family were at increased risk of it!.

Your grandmother may know if her cancer was genetic; you don't say how old she was when she was diagnosed - the younger you are at diagnosis the greater the chance that the cancer may be genetic; cancers diagnosed after the age of 50 are much less likely to be genetic!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It can be passed through both sides or neither side!. Not all cancers are genetic and even if there is a history of cancer in the family doesn't mean it is due to a genetic mutation!.

Both my grandfathers and my dad's mom had cancer, My dad and his brother have had cancer and his other brother died of cancer!. My dad's sister has had breast cancer twice!. My sister and I have also had breast cancer and my 2nd cousin on my mom's side had kidney cancer!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My understanding is that if you have an immediate family member-your grandmother-had cancer, you are at a greater risk because it runs in your family!. I also think that all women should do monthly self exams, cancer isn't choosy!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Your odds are always greater when it is your maternal grandparents( mom's side) for diseases like breast cancer to pass on thrie grandkids!. You can still get stuff from your parental grandparents ( dad's side) but stronger on mom's side!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
